We have just purchased a caravan its an ABI. We have just registered with Cris using the number but it has a 'Q' for the year of Manufacture ? Is there anyway just to confirm a year (its etched on all windows etc so its a post 1992 van )
N = 1992
P = 1993
R = 1994
S = 1995
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998
X = 1999
I have since found this :)
Be warned that some European manufacturers use the letter ‘Q’ for their build year code and therefore it would be wise to contact the manufacturer directly if you have any concerns.
Have a look in the repairs forum under "deciphering the VIN number.This part may be relevant to your caravan:
Imports and Pre-92 registered vans (like ours) do not carry a year identifier. The chassis number, manufacturer code and number of axles is still recorded in the 17 digit number, but the "year" character is replaced with, a "Q". Much like in the Car world, where cars of undeterminable age or built from more than one car (like kit-cars) carry a "Q" plate.
That's an odd one! I hadn't realised that they missed out any letters, but what Rob says makes a lot of sense. I would imagine then, Tomh23, that your van is pre-1991, but registered voluntarily.
Its all very bizzare but the caravan is a 1996 /1997 Model, but the 'Q' i can only assume indicates that it wasnt actually registered with Cris until 2004.
Very bizzare but it all checks out so that all I can think lol
Date of First Registration
This is the date the caravan was registered with its first keeper on the CRiS
database. This information will help you to assess the caravan’s true value. For
caravans manufactured prior to 1992 and for personal imports : 28/06/2004
I had a Geist (German) van and it had a Q in the CRIS number. This was just because it was a foreign van and tells you nothing about the age - could be anything.

My 1991 Avondale is an N date code. So 1992 appears to to be incorrect, or it applies to 1991 and 1992 similar to car registrations.
And 100001% sure its a 1991 van. I have the original purchase documents dated 1991 and the CRIS form states date of registration as 15/10/91
I guess that does mean that the year designation goes over two years then as my 1992 Elddis has "N" in the CRIS number.
