We're thinking of a seasonal pitch for next year, any advice/downfalls/pros or cons will be welcome. We have found a site, not an easy search as a lot have waiting lists, but this one is increasing their seasonal pitches to accommodate the list.
We've had a look at the site today in terrible weather and it looks fine, staff very friendly and chatted to seasonal pitcher who was very positive
What does it do to insurance, I've looked at the document and nothing mentioned,but I will contact them.
As usual i know I get advice to make me ponder !!😁😁

Pro's its mostly setup. Some leave the awning up but some sites won't allot that.

Ideal to chuck some stuff in the car and go.

Downside the initial cost, minimum stay requirements? If you do not stay a fair bit then it turns out costly per night.

Example, mate paid £1200 last year, £1500 this year with a minimum stay requirement of 30 nights. Basic site with just a small shower/toilet cabin and nothing else.

He didnt mention the per night cost but it was close to £20 pn at least a year or so back.

I thought he was mad paying that much to have the same pitch when he could have stored the van there for a fraction of that price and just pulled it onto a pitch as required.

Middle of nowhere and only 3/4 hour from home. So barely any difference if using as a base for trips out.

Insurance will vary a lot. Some may just require the hitch and wheel clamps they probably already do. Others may require the site to be gated or for you to check on the van at regular intervals.

Shopping around should get your something that suits your needs.

Some insurances stipulate that you have to visit the van every few days. Thats worth checking.
We love our seasonal pitch. It runs from mid-March to late October - Snowdonia National Park rules. If we stay in it 10 days a month, we are ahead of what we pay (if that makes sense.)
Our site owner checks awnings etc when its very windy or wet and makes safe if needed. Others might not, its worth asking other owners. Ours is like a little community where we say hello and stop for a chat. Thats nice. Others might be different.
Get a local map and just explore the area. Ours feels like our second home now. we keep tins/packets of food, tea and coffee etc and some instant meals so all we have to do is grab some milk and butter en route.

We tried a seasonal pitch last year but decided it’s not for us - yet! We were on a lovely little site with friendly people and it was great to be able to go as and when we felt like it without having to set up and pack away each time, however we missed going to different places and didn’t use the seasonal pitch enough (as we took the van abroad in the summer) for it to be cost effective. At times we felt almost obliged to go to the van because it was on the seasonal pitch and we’d paid for it!!!
If we had just wanted somewhere to get away from everything for a few days at a time (as when we were still working) or if we wanted to caravan without the towing (as we may in a few years) it would have been ideal, but just at the moment we still enjoy touring at home and abroad.
Insurance wise it made no difference (we insure through the Caravan & Motorhome Club) as long as the usual security conditions (wheelclamps etc) were met, but to be sure you’ll have to check with your insurer.
If you’re unsure whether or not a seasonal pitch will suit you, why not give it a try for a season and then you’ll know?

Thanks for this, we are going to give it a go, we feel we'll get more use out of it, the packing up early either bank holiday Monday or Sunday seems to be a waste of a day for us. It's about an hour and half journey without the van,so it's less pressure after work on Friday. Offset petrol,and wear and tear on the car, the extra travelling time we should get more time in it.
It's becoming hard work to find a site last minute and If there's a good weather forecast we've struggled to get anywhere we can get to after work.
Have actually thought of getting rid at one point and using b and b's.😨
Spoken with our insurance and no change as long as it's got wheel clamp, hitch etc, so just waiting to hear that we've got a pitch then roll on March☺☺

Can I ask who your insurer is? I am with Caravan Guard and they have told me that I have to have a wheel lock (not a wheel clamp) which I don't think I can do as I have steel wheels on a 2008 Al-Ko chassis (Adria Altea 542DT).

Have you considered rallying/social camping?
The CMC you have to book so probably no good to you, but the CCC you don't (most rallies anyway). We love the ability to finish work on Friday, look at the weekend weather and just hitch up and go without a second thought. Okay we keep it local and normally stay within the county, but it still amazes me how many places on my door step we've never really explored.
