we have a swift elegance 565, the last time we were away was 5 weeks ago just gone to it to find the battery flat nothings been left on so wondering if we need a new battery

Did you check that it was still fully charged when you got home from your last time away? If not it could have gone flat while you were away, and then being left flat it will now have had it. My guess is that yes, you do need a new battery. However, if it is fairly new it might be worth trying to charge it using a smart-charger. I don't hold out a lot of hope though if it's been left flat for 5 weeks.

If it did go flat while you were away it might also be worth checking your charger if you were on EHU whilst away.

the battery was,nt flat when we got home because we used the motor mover to get the caravan onto the drive

cold weather tends to seek out weak batteries

If you are certain that there has been nothing draining the battery since you have been back, Moorlander is probably right, and your battery probably does need replacing.

On further thought, if you used your mover quite a lot when you got back, and didn't put it on charge afterwards, it might have been left in a fairly discharged state by that.

You should charge your battery after every trip, especially if you are using a mover.
A smart charger might not be able to start charging if battery is so low. I would recommend putting some life into the battery by putting it on a normal charger and then use the smart charger and it could be recovered.

put it on a heavy duty boost charger if you have access to one.. if you see the maps going into the battery slowly going up it may be okay..

having said that if it getting on in years a new one wont do any harm..

Our van is stored at home, so I can keep it on permanent 'float' charge using the van's own charging unit. Check the battery by giving it a full charge, then keep it disconnected and leave it for a few hours. If a check with a voltmeter then shows a drop of 12 volts or below, the battery is probably in need of replacement.
Battery life can vary enormously. I had one battery that was only 3 months old. It worked with the mover when we left home, but 300 miles on it would not operate the mover. Connecting it to the EHU and leaving it on overnight, the above test showed the battery to be faulty. I bought a new battery locally and returned the dud battery at the end of the holiday. Fault was confirmed and eventually I was refunded.

Whilst the motor mover might have worked that will have flattened the battery even more than your use whilst away.
I strongly suspect that your battery is now totally flat and therefore potentially ruined. You should also note that cold weather also doesn't help in keeping a charge in the battery.
I would strongly advise you to find some means of charging the battery whilst your caravan is not in use, either at the van or by taking the battery home and charging it there.

If you used the mover that would of pulled battery volts down. If you did not ensure that the Black button on the power unit under seat was not in the out position the fridge and heating control boards would still have been drawing current and have soon of finished running it down. This is from my own experience. Now always ensure button is in out position

When we bought our latest caravan I fitted an isolation switch that isolates the battery from everything inside the caravan. The movers already had an isolator. With both of those switches turned off, nothing can drain our battery. I also fitted an accurate voltmeter and check the voltage left in the battery when I park it at home. I then switch both isolators off.

Im lucky to be able to store our van indoors all the time it isn't being used and the workshop is heated so it keeps the van , battery and my other toys warm throughout the winter.
I would strongly advise to all who store outside to remove the battery to a warm place and put it on an optimate through the winter if the van isn't being used....You can still keep the van plugged into the mains to keep the heating on low etc during very cold weather ( just switch off the 12 v charger via the circuit breaker in the van )

batteries hate cold weather if they are not being used....

I'll certainly be bringing my battery in soon. Wish I had somewhere under cover for my van too.
