Seen a 2016 van we like, £16750. Want to trade in our 2011 Lunar ClubmanSB. Offered £9k over the phone, can I find out online whether this is a good trade in figure?
Is this a good time of year to haggle hard for a better deal?
The Omnivent Extractor doesn’t work, should I tell the dealer?
Best to visit a few caravan sales grounds and make a note of the prices for their vans - looking for as near as possible those similar to the vans you want to buy or sell. You will not get the ticket price for your Lunar - the dealer has to make a profit, and a buyer will not pay a dealers price - but you may get a better deal from a private buyer.
It's always good to haggle, but pushing it too hard can be as bad as not hard enough. Dealers and private sellers both have to cope with the chancers who try to take the proverbial.
You say you've had an offer of £9k for your Lunar. Do you feel this is a fair price? If it is below what you hoped for, then by how much? Think about any cost you might incur by refusing this offer and waiting for another - which may be no better and could even be worse.
Here's a personal example. I had found a vehicle that I dearly wanted. The trade-in for my current vehicle was about £400 less than I'd hoped and I considered keeping it and selling privately. It was a well kept car with FSH and low mileage. In the end I let it go for trade-in. That was in July, and it's a good thing I did. Latest check on gov website shows it still untaxed, so not yet sold. The cost of keeping it to sell privately would by now have used up my hoped-for difference, and then some.

Thanks, I know that with a car I can go in W H Smiths any look at a Glass’s typeguide and see a range or trade in figures depending on mileage/ condition etc.Is there such a thing for caravans?
Dealers all seem to be advertising “my van” at £11995.
That’s £3k more than the trade in offer.
I recently traded in my caravan, I was offered 9k last year but decided to keep it for another season. Went to a different dealer this time, took all the service records etc and described the van as immaculate which it was, he offered me 10k without even seeing it. When I took it to the dealership he never even checked it. I drove away with my new to me van. A week laterI had to go back to collect a set of brand new carpets, my old van had gone, he'd sold it the same day for ten and half thousand so I made a thousand and he made £500 although he did make £2K on the van I bought as it had the receipt in the book pack! Good luck whatever you do, give the new van a really good check over.
winter is a good time to buy...Plenty of second hand van laying around dealers yards..Its wet and damp this year so any leaks / damp will show up . No good buying a van in the heat of a UK summer when its bone dry then finding out over Autumn / Winter it leaks like a sieve !!!
Dealers want to make a sale to keep the business going over winter so make an offer for the new van well below the asking price...you may get a better deal.
Also consider selling your van after winter if you can and going in with cash or the safer way is to purchase on finance ...if there are any issues with the new van then the finance co will sort this out as its technically their van until you have paid in full. Then once you are happy with the new van...pay off the finance..
Most dealers welcome finance as they receive a commission for selfing it so you may get an even better deal , all be it a short term finance ..
Thanks.
Dont want to sell privately, van has a few issues, nothing serious.
Don’t want finance.
Van has full service history , which confirms no damp.
The van I am looking at is priced a couple of grand less than identical ones being sold by other dealers.
Seller a small family Lunar dealer who described the van as immaculate.
Will go and have a look this week.
