I hired a digger and trailer then found oil on my cararavan tow ball!
Has anyone been successful in cleaning it off? Towing the caravan at the weekend to Moreton in Marsh.

white spirit will leave an oil residue that would need meths to clean that off, easier to use brake cleaner, as you should carry that for when cleaning before hitching up anyway along with some emery paper and a clean cloth

I always use clutch and brake cleaner on a dry towball before hitching up as it removes any particles of dust as well as any oil residue.

Not emery cloth as it will eventually reduce the diameter of the ball. Use scotch bright or the stainless steel type of pot scratcher.

depends on how often you use your ball!, but most will rust over, you need to rub them with emery paper and then clean off with brake cleaner before each use really, to prolong your stabiliser

I use one of those black covers too, but as mine is an old style hitch, and I tow a trailer with an ordinary hitch too, the cover is more to stop us getting grease on ourselves off the towball. A bit of grease on the towball stops squeaking and graunching noises you get with older hitches.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin
