I know this has been asked lots of times but views and advice change year on year.
We are heading to north Devon from Doncaster area. Done it many, many times in peak school holidays on a Saturday and its hell round Bristol from early on a Saturday morning.
Went to Cornwall last summer. Set off from home at 6pm and had a lovely easy run to our site, and on to their early arrivals field by 1am for the night.
The Devon site doesnt have an early arrivals field but we want to drive down Friday night as it was so much nicer with less traffic.
Where can we stop? Destination is ilfracombe.
I dont think a campsite will work for an overnight as we will be arriving midnight-ish.
Taunton Deane services lorry park the last services before you leave the M5 for the Devon link road. Stopped on there times, especially when coming back home the other way from channel from France.
we tried M5 services Michaelwood but very noisy all the night, so we upped sticks & pushed on to the A38 heading for St Ives , with time to spare we stopped in a layby & snoozed just as noisy but at least it was free!
I think your better off, getting your head down and getting some sleep on the Friday night, and setting off at 2am sat morning, travel down past Bristol and stop for a break at Gordano services just south of Bristol which will get you past any of the traffic problems, you then have approx. 2 1/2 hrs driving to go to lfracombe, this would mean you arrive at a respectabl;e 9.30 am get on your pitch and legs down kettle on and then bed for a few hours everything else can wait. this is of course assuming your caravan is at home
I think all we can do is get up early and set off somewhere between 3-4am getting passed Bristol for 7.30am. Stop at gordabo for the max before we get a big fine or forced to buy a ticket (prob 2 hours?). Back on the road 9ish. And dawdle to ilfracombe for 12.
you really need to get past Bristol for 6.30 am at the latest, then Gordano services, but couldn't you pull over in barnstable at a supermarket? get stocked up and have a coffee before that final bit to the site
Yeah we could pull into the Tesco at Barnstaple. Not sure if its got a height barrier. Weve done the route many, many times but usually with a tent so just stay at a premier inn past Bristol and carry on the next day at our leisure. Even been known to get on the beach whilst killing time till we could pitch. Only 2nd year with a caravan and all our usual ploys to beat the traffic dont work when towing!!
Guess were not going to avoid that very early start
I have done the travel thr the night many many times, its not as bad as you think, just make sure that you have everything you need done on the Thursday, have a quietish day on the Friday, get to bed as early as you can on Friday night, then go, but like I have said you really do need to avoid Bristol after 6.30 am even coming off the motorway and heading south using the a38 you will find a few truckstops (great for breakfast!)
It's pot luck whichever route you take,it seems to be a daily occurrence with accidents causing delays on the M5 and the A38 from Highbridge to Taunton can be a nightmare during the day due to the construction traffic for Hinckley Point C nuclear power station.
I would try to make it past Taunton if possible.
