Heart attack last year followed by stents and recovery has caused me to consider whether I continue caravanning.
Have an old 1998 Eldiss whirlwind GT in good order and completely dry. My wife is concerned about my ability to use this anymore as I do not seem to be recovering as well as I should. Really torn over this as I am desperate to have a break from home but I now feel torn over that sale of my "last post". Driving me mad. Anyone had similar circumstances and what would you advise.
Still have to deal with my wife though but see no more holidays now. Roll on the next attack!

My wife, who does all our driving and towing, had stents over 20 years ago. I, do all the on site erection and had 3 stents about 10 years ago. Currently I am awaiting to go in for a CTO PCI ( basically a dynorod procedure on the circumflex artery) in April.

I don't know your age but I am 80 and rather gorgeous to look at.

I expect to be out and about and touring France mid to late May.

Your heart is just a stupid muscle that thrives on sensible exercise, so ,putting your feet up and feeling sorry for yourself is the wrong thing to do.

Set you goal to be able to take your caravan out as you did before. Whatever you do, don't giveup.

My view is be sensible. Why not visit a local site? Just a handful of miles under your belt. See how you handle setting up. See how you feel once you have settled in and got a cuppa on the go. Have a word with your consultant....I almost guarantee they will say don't stop doing this kind of stuff.

Great inspiring words btw Stuart.

Have you been refered to a rehab course. If you haven't ask your Doctor. We have a charity in this area called Heartbeat who have a gym where people can rehabilitate. My husband had an episode of AF following sepsis and he has regained his normal heart function. He's 70. SGThomas is right the heart is a muscle with supervision you may be able to regain your stamina.

Thanks to you all for your input. First I have been to rehab but was left unsupervised on a treadmill and suffered a further episode requiring a 2 night stay in hospital. Never went back as the physios were treating patients as if they were fit enough to be left alone with the equipment cranked up high. Part of the problem is with the medications I am taking which drop my BP to a very low level. Hoping this can be corrected so that I buck up as life is so dreadful at the moment. On 10 different pills daily including aspirin, 3 of which are BP reducers. DVLA given go ahead to drive while they investigate as I live in an isolated area with no other transport and no other drivers. Will hang onto van as long as I can but pressure from wife is getting a bit much. Will let you know how things progress.

excuse me for saying this but I don't think the full issue is to do with your heart, I think you should be going back to see the doc and speaking to him about depression

my husband had the same thing done nearly 6 years ago now, he works full time, he ride his motorbike, we caravan as often as we can. yeah life changes a tad after the stent due to the medication, but it most certainly doesn't stop

I can only speak from my experience nearly 17 years ago at the age of 48 I had my first HA that year in quick succession I had four more after each of the first 4 I had stents which unfortunately failed after the 5th I had a triple bypass.

the good news is as i say that was 17 years ago, this site and the people on it in those first few years got me through the worst years of my life, the ops take a hell of a lot out of you physically and then the mental side hits you.

You need to get help. The national heart foundation is a good place to start.
You need to go to a gym (a proper cardiac one ) not for the exercise but the confidence it builds back as you realise what you can do as you gradually build fitness.

You also need people to keep you positive and slightly pushing you as I say back in 2002 there were some real mick takers and comedians on here who didn't let me feel sorry for myself.

Give yourself time it took me a good two years to get as normal as i'm ever going to be (thats cause my wife says I was never normal ) but since I have driven through France Spain Germany Holland been up to Scotland watch out for mountains in Scotland the air is thinner at the top not good for the likes of me and you and this year bought a new camper van I find it easier than caravaning.

DONT GIVE UP AND DONT SIT AROUND feeling sorry for your self, you already know life is to short.

Good luck get your meds sorted

Doug ...

Whoever put you on a treadmill needs their head examining!

They are one of the worst excercise machines ever invented ... for fit people, let alone anyone with heart challenges.

Maybe if used for very short interval training as part of a circuit, they still have a function ... but many surveys have shown they are poor at any sort of weight control, are so repetitive that the body learns to deal with it in a minimal effort way, and muscles go into minimal use mode.

I'm 76, with a pacemaker ... my home gym circuit comprises an eliptical trainer, rowing machine, cycle, cross-country ski machine ... I do short burst training in a circuit mode ... 15 mins a day ... is all you need to keep the body fit ... and some stretches after.

I'd be wary of gym businesses ... they have their own agendas ...

On holidays I cycle and kayak quite a lot ...

Hi, please dont give up, its the last thing. 2 yrs ago i badly broke my leg (i know nothing like a HA), but it still left me im-mobile, just before the carvanning season. I got the go ahead to drive as i had an auto and it was my left leg which was broke. my wife and i managed to connect vthe van to car via the mover and me on crutches. Arriving at site we had phoend ahead and requested if possible a pitch nr the loo's, which was marked as disabled for us when we go to site. With the help of my wife and son (12yrs), we set the van up, including air awning etc.
During the two weeks stay, i maanged to learn to vwalk again, and went back to work directly after. being in the caravan is what i needed R&R. take it easy small steps at first it will come back.

enjoy the season hopefully.

I do hope the op is able to continue with his hobby which he obviously enjoys very much.
What worries me ( and perhaps his wife also ) is not the set up but actually driving with a caravan attached.
Dangerously low blood pressure due to medication and driving? Sounds worrying to me.

To be honest, waiting one more year with a 1998 caravan isn't going to affect your resale value much, yes, there are possible storage and maintenance costs but, if you were well this wouldn't matter and you will be well in the future. The extra cost of having to replace everything if you were to sell now before you have reached your full potential should be considered.

I notice your wife telling you to get rid of the caravan is causing you considerable stress.

Sit your wife down and have a proper discussion, set a timeline to discuss the van in say 9 months, explain to her that the stress over the van isn't helping. Ask her for the sake of your stress levels to leave discussion until the agreed date.

Why is your wife so keen to let it go, has she perhaps had enough?

You could always put your caravan on a seasonal pitch for this year. A local site or a site in easy reach of a simple train journey would work.

Your blood pressure is being deliberately kept low at the moment to avoid stress on the stent, this will be able to be looked at again in the future. Your body will gradually learn to adjust to your lower BP. If you are suffering dizziness due to it dropping when you get up, get a drink before rising in the mornings. Eat little and often as a large meal will cause blood to rush to your stomach leaving you feeling tired and perhaps dizzy. Ask your Doctor or nurse to check you for postural hypotension (dropping BP when you first get up from a rest) it can be sorted. Take a regular nap to aid recovery.

I think possibly the most important thing for you currently is to book a break, it's low season book a cottage somewhere close by and have a break. Owning a caravan doesn't exclude you from booking a cottage, hotel, guest house etc.

My brother in law had stents fitted 10 years ago he took early retirement thinking he hadn't long! He started with gently walks alternate days gradually increasing the frequency and distance. !0 years later he is cycling long distances on a racing bike looking 15 years younger than he did.

Recovery takes time, much longer than any of us think. Get a break without the van booked then go from there. If your caravan sits and melts in storage does it really matter as long as you gain joy from its potential future use?

Why not put your van on a seasonal pitch for this year while you get yourself fit ?

That was you can just concentrate on getting better & have a bolt hole

Some great advice from fellow campers, I particularly liked the idea of not doing anything in a hurry.
Leave it for as long as you need, it's not costing you any money and you still have the joy of ownership even if you are only tinkering about in it.
I must confess I slept in my FC last year for a night on the drive, simply because I could. When I say drive it holds two cars so the neighbours probably thought I was mad or the wife kicked me out!
