We have joint silver membership with AA which gets me or the missus fixed or home anywhere in the U.K. with the caravan and also includes homestart. Price has just jumped from £140 per year to £280 per year even though we haven't used it.
This happens every year with me countering it with an "I'm not paying that" phone call where they usually offer it at last year's price but this year best they could offer is £179.
Are they any better deals to be had out there?
All we really need is to know that we'll be brought home along with the van in an emergency.
Have a look at autoaidbreakdown.co.uk. £60 covers you and your partner for any car and attached caravan. Gives full cover. We have used them twice admittedly for minor problems but they were efficent.
Discounted Insurance Quotes for UKCampsite.co.uk visitors! Up to 12.5% off!
If you are in Caravan and Motorhome Club you can get Green Flag cover. I think ours was £120 for comprehensive car and van cover.
I have used it a couple of times for my 12 year old Saab and an old Range Rover we had. Good service.

I am with Start Rescue and I think they are worth a look. We don't have home start, but they will recover our car and caravan from anywhere, and I paid £40.50 last September. They don't have their own recovery vehicles though, they use local recovery companies.
We have been with them a number of years now and only had to call them out once when our old Volvo's alternator packed up. They picked us up and transported the car to our home as I requested as well as any other company would have done.
Start Rescue have a number of different packages and a range of prices to suit. Just pick the one you want.

Green Flag has size & weight limits on caravan/trailer cover (7 metres & 3.5 tonnes) but if you join via Caravan & Motorhome Club, you get Mayday cover which has no size or weight restrictions.
Mayday cover renewal just through the door, same price as last year, £102

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I don't remember reading anything about size or weight limits with Start Rescue either, and that only costs me £40.50 a year. I think it only went up by 50p at most last September when I renewed.
Caravans and Trailers
In the event of a breakdown and a caravan/trailer is attached, providing the caravan/trailer is fitted with a standard 50mm tow ball coupling hitch and does not exceed 7 metres/23 feet in length (not including the length of the A-frame and hitch), we will arrange and pay for the caravan/trailer to be recovered with the vehicle at no extra cost.

Thanks Blueexpo97, I should have checked myself really. As 7 metres is the maximum length allowed for a normal touring caravan anyway, effectively no restrictions then. Not bad at all! Good value I'd say.
I'm with LV insurance and there brittania roadside breakdown cover also covers the attached van get you home deal and will also come out to burst van tyres etc . been with them 3 years now and my total insurance cover car + recovery goes down year on year to .

That seems very odd.
It isn't as though they can take the A frame off of the 'van, so why do they discount it when discussing the max van length?
We have our UK breakdown through Adrian Flux and have never had a problem. However, I can't remember whether we have ever needed them when we had the caravan on the back.
For overseas we buy cover from Red Pennant. Pricey, but well worth it. We have needed them in a major way twice, with the car having to be repatriated and a loan car sent out from the UK. Brilliant service.
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
Beware if you are with Mayday and your caravan is kept in storage. Also Mayday will only take the vehicle to a garage within 10 miles of the breakdown.
If you breakdown on your return journey, Mayday will take the car and caravan to the storage and then you have the choice of the vehicle to a garage within 10 miles of the storage location or taking the vehicle home. If you choose to the garage then you have to find your own way home with all your luggage and pets if any.
After being with Mayday for over 20 years we only found out the above recently. We have now moved to RAC Arrival with the C&CC!
