Just a warning to you folks selling on site. I have just received an offer of full price, site unseen from somebody who claimed ‘to be serving their country ‘ and therefore could not take any calls. Wanted details to pay by PayPal. On checking PayPal site I understand this is a common scam.
I have now blocked emailer - have sold previous items via this site and normally no problem, I guess we just all have to be very careful as unscrupulous people around.

Apparently the scammers send an email purporting to be PayPal saying money has been transferred. I have to say grateful for online advice re scamming. Other clue was that scammer claimed he could not make phone contact as serving overseas.
I just wanted to heighten awareness as initially sounded ok.

The money hitting your paypal account should be enough. Happens everyday with ebay purchases and few issues.

Your could think ahh transfer the money to your bank to be extra safe and it will transfer. Then you hand over the caravan and hours/days/weeks later you get a message from paypal saying the funds were transferred without the accoutn holders permission and they want their money back.

So paypal repay the original account holder and claim the money back from you. You either payup or paypal's debt collection agency take you to court for the funds.

You have no paypal protection because you cannot prove they received the item. Usually its easy with proof of delivery, but with a caravan you wont have that.

Happens a lot with cars, caravans and motorhomes. Bother buying and selling them.

Wifes friend was selling a games console for £200 or £300, received a cheque for £3000. Buyer send a lovely message its OK i trust you. Simply post the package and then send me a paypal gift payment for whats left and because your trusting keep an extra 20% for yourself.

She was about to send the money... Big mistake the cheque sent was not a UK one and would have bounced/reclaimed as stolen weeks/months later.

So they would have lost the console and over £2500 as they would not have been able to reclaim a paypal gift payment.

These scams are big business.

Check motorhomes that are too good to be true. Seller is abroad and will have it shipped to you..

They will get you to pay something that makes it appear your safe.... You pay company x you receive the item and when your happy with it the money gets released to them.

Nope, you pay and the money is instantly gone. And nothing will ever arrive.

Several threads on this site, but google car, motorhome, caravan fraud and there will be a load of listings.

One thing to watch is where you cannot view it if they are selling or where a buying cannot come.

Lots of excuses, they are working abroad. Its a gift for someone else.

Often the pictures are genuine and if you google them the vehicle was sold elsewhere recently at a much higher price, they stole the pictures to make it seem like they really have it..

One reason why I closed my eBay/Paypal accounts was because it was too easy for them to remove money from your bank if they wanted to. I now buy from eBay as a guest buyer which is the same as buying directly from a shop but with added protection.

We had. The same scam happen to us on Saturday claming to be on a military base we called the number no such phone number We thought it was a scam anyway luckily lots of good advice out there to stop these people

No way I would ever buy anything expensive off a site like ebay without taking a very close look at it myself, particularly something like a car or caravan.

As for selling, I want to see the buyer personally. I want them to hand over payment, and take ownership directly from me. I also want to have details of where to contact them before I'll even consider the sale.

I won't even look at any expensive item for sale unless it is relatively local, and definitely not abroad! Nor will I deal with anyone who won't make direct personal contact with me.

There is always another buyer, and always another similar item for sale, so why take unnecessary risks?

Its the same problem with ebay, I know a guy who sold a iphone on ebay, the buyer paid by pay pal & both the seller and buyer met in leeds as they both were shopping at the same time so rather than posting he handed his phone over 1 week later he had a paypal dospute saying the buyer had not recieved the phone and paypal gave them their money back, the seller was £300 out of pocket

i sold a phone on ebay and the bloke who received it swapped it for a wooden block, took a picture and claimed i`d tried to rip him off...

doesnt matter how careful you are, how many precautions you take, how clever you think you are, if you buy/sell at a distance you are open to being scammed. even bob. the bit about them having access to your bank account, they aint interested in that. why should they go to all that trouble when they can sell you a block of wood for £300 with you doing all the work for them. i got a tree outside, theoretically i`m already a millionaire.the more elaborate the scam, the more chance of failure.

the simplest scam is the absence of grammar. compare these two

nokia 6210, box and instructions.

that comma makes all the difference.

looks like a simple grammatical error but in a court of law you have bought a box and instructions for a nokia. there is no mention of a phone for sale.

the other one is you actually buy a picture of the phone, because right at the bottom in really small letters it says

"this auction is for a picture of a nokia 6210. you are bidding on a picture."

that line is buried among the cut and paste description of the phone and about three hundred lines of useless info that you speed read through.

but, under ebay terms and conditions, they have declared it.

you can minimise the risk, but you cannot eliminate it.
