Hi i am a total beginner at towing a caravan and need to ask if any body knows if my Peugeot 407 1.6 diesel will tow a Swift Charisma 230 up Birk Brow 15% gradiant cheers
Assuming that your car can legally and safely tow this caravan then I would assume that this journey is possible but it will probably be fairly slow. I had a 1.6 diesel Focus and that definitely needed more power on some climbs.

as you approach it past the scrap yards, and then thr charltons hang back from any traffic, give yourself a big gap to have a good run at it, take the bottom corner as wide as you can (it becomes dual carriageway just before) this will help you loads, however the worst bit is at the top bend but by then you will likely be in least 2nd gear and perhaps have gone into first, keep an eye on your water temp but don't worry there is a big layby at the top with a tea wagon in it
I assume that if you drive up it you will also have to drive down it on the way home. That would worry me more especially if it is a long hill with sharp bends.
15% is about 1 in 6 and most car towing limits are for a standing start on a 1 in 8. You can convert your limit by multiplying the limit by 6 and divide by 8 to calculate what you can pull away with on a 1 in 6.
I have a Pug Partner Teepee with the 1.6 diesel 115bhp engine. I live up a 1 in 8 hill and pull our van 1150kg MTPLM up it with ease but it is only a short hill. I normally use 1st gear as I have to stop at the bottom and turn into the road.
