Hi, I'm looking to buy a hobby caravan and was told I would have difficulty with caravan sites because of this particular type of caravan, has anyone had a problem?

Not true of all campsites. Generally the Clubs are happy to accept Continental caravans however all other campsites will have their own rules so its a case of checking with individual campsites.

You may find that some companies won't insure it either.

I think you’ll find Hobby is the make preferred by travellers so some caution on the part of site owners is understandable really.

Hi,
Many thanks for all the replies and advice, didn't think about a problem with insurance.
I was thinking of a Hobby because the fixed bed and fixed bunk beds are already made up so there's no fussing putting beds together as I have rheumatoid arthritis and find it difficult to pull and lift.

Hi all,
If I don't buy a Hobby, which makes would you recommend and what issues should I look out for, I'm looking to spend up to £15,000 and I want one with fixed bunk beds.
Thanks

The first thing to think of is what you and your car can tow. Do you have a B+E licence?

Have a look at the caravanfinder website where you can see the various layouts available and then see which caravans are available in your chosen layout. Make a note of caravans that you like the look of and then visit caravan dealers to see them in the flesh.

If you could put your location in your profile we could also suggest local dealers that may be worth visiting.

Thanks Rob, I'm going to site the caravan and I have a family member who will tow it there for me with no problem.
Apparently the newish Bailey caravans have special inner panels so they don't get damp issues?

I've had a Hobby 560 for over 15 years, and NEVER had any problems at sites, either in the UK or in France, and I have been on very many sites in that time. It's quite handy actually - we often go out with friends with a UK 'van, and when we both park nose out or nose in, our awnings are facing each other. Very sociable!!

Regarding insurance, 14-15 years ago, it was a problem - possibly (probably!!) because of the Pikey connection, but since the late noughties, I have never been refused.

Theoretically, in the early years, I was breaking the law as I needed a 3.5 ton tractor unit, but since the UK HAD to modify the law to accept 2.5m 'vans, I was 'legal'. In spite of that, I never even got stopped by the boys in blue.

The Hobby is very sturdy and large, and very little has gone wrong with mine. Don't know what vintage you are looking at, but the earlier 'dry' models had quite a small hot water tank. Never bothers me as it gives enough to wash up with, and I always use the on-site showers.

Best of luck

Hi Delboya and Alan,
Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated. I’m looking to buy the Hobby 720 ukfe as it has the fixed bed and fixed bunk beds plus the side dinette.
The problem I face now is finding one in my husbands price range lol.
I’m looking for one around 2013 upwards, can you tell me if there is anything I should look out for when buying a used hobby?
Thanks
Martine

We were at Tenby Tourers last week and they had several Hobby caravans in stock, it might be worth a visit or phone call to see if they are expecting any used vans in at the end of the season.

I think a 720 is probably too big to be towed by an ordinary car/van so may need to be transported by a professional transport company.

That is correct. The max length you can tow with a 'regular' car is a body length of 7m. Over that, you need a tractor unit of 3500kg or more. The Hobby 720 has a body length of 7.8m (with an overall length of over 9m).

Can't offer you any particular advice about used Hobby's - mine is quite long in the tooth now and I'm sure you will be looking for a much newer one. Just make sure you take a damp meter and test all over the inside.

Thanks Del, I will go and buy a damp metre for when/if my dream van becomes available. Searching all the time but with no luck, maybe I will have better luck at the end of the season x

Make sure you have a good wheel and hitch lock, possibly tracker fitted. Some insurers will require it.
Hobby are popular with certain nomadic individuals who may not wish to purchase a Hobby but acquire one!
