We are currently in not so sunny but extremely windy Devon. Does anyone have any advice on when we should take awning down the current wind speed is about 30mph and our brand new dorema awning is taking a battering we are expecting 45mph on Friday but does anyone know what speed the awning can take up to. I am here on my own at moment so to take it down now is not an option as I can't do it on my own. The pegs are all still in ground so any advice on what wind speed awning will stay up in is my h appreciated. Thanks

My best advice would be to invest in some storm straps and really peg those into the ground, other than doing that there isn't anything else you can do, especially as your currently by yourself.

As for what speeds an awning can take, that's up for debate. It all depends on how well the awning is pegged down, what direction the wind is coming from and if you have the skirt pegged down.

I've seen some awnings collapse in quite high storm winds, and yet the awnings next door wasn't touched.

Hi Jenny, im sorry to hear that the weather is not being kind to you. There are many factors that will influance what wind speeds an awning will stand upto, including how it is fitted with storm straps, the direction of the prevailing wind, and any shelter offered by nearby hedges and buildings to name but a few.

If you are really worried and want to take your awning down, maybe seek the help and advice of the site warden?
We have often found that they are happy to help, especially if a small token of apprieciation is offered, such as some nice liquid refreshment, or a tip to buy a pint or two for all their help and hard work.

You could also position any windbreaks you have so that they give added protection before the gusts hit the awning itself. If its a Traditional type of awning, you could also cross-guy the frame down on the inside, this will give it added strength and help prevent it from lifting should the wind get underneath it.

Good Luck anyway,

Julia

Thanks Julia we are in the Unfortunate position of being on an end pitch so wind from all direction typical. It has calmed down a bit so have survived the day think we might take it down for the 45mph forecast for Friday though.

Agree with everything romany girl said except using the wind breaks. If the wind does pick up, these are likely to collapse long before the awning, so are unlikely to help. However, if you have a car, parking that strategically might help to give some protection.

Also, fellow campers will normally help, I would happily lend a hand if I was there. Please do ask your neighbours.

Hope you get sorted OK

Hi jenny, I hope you managed to get the awning down!

I know it's a bit late for this time, but you could always get one of these for just in case it ever happens again. I carry one around but have only used it once, and that was in very high winds, and I ended up tying it to the car!

Hi jax365

We did manage to take awning down and are so glad we did the winds here were much higher than forecast. We put awning back up on the Sunday and Friday just gone we were hit again as they only forecast 30mph we left awning but it was much higher than that and we spent the whole day holding it down some of the poles have now bent. We will get one of those kits for next year thank you
