Hi all,

I'm just wondering why someone like Thetford hasn't produced an oven that also incorporates a lower power microwave.

Seems so obvious, especially for caravans like the new Bailey Discovery range since there's no room for a dedicated microwave.

We have a microwave/grill in our 'van, we didn't think we would use an oven as we mainly camp in the warmer months. It's a Panasonic, available from High St stores.
We seldom use the grill, as we normally cook outside, but the microwave is used for heating ready made food or sometimes for cooking veg.

I think the micro/combo ovens are a bit bigger.

From past experiances of owning a Combi Oven/Grill/Microwave at home, l found them quite unreliable, somewhat difficult to clean propperly, due to food splats getting stuck to the grill elements, and the full roof area of the oven, resulting in a blue smoke haze as the conventional oven heated up and burned off any food debris, splats of fat ect.

They are also very expensive to repair if the microwave fails, and its often cheaper to replace it. Not such a problem for a free standing unit, but something fitted into a caravan may not be so easy.

There is also the question of what would you use as an oven when no EHU was available? A lot of buyers would be put off buying a caravan that could not be used to cook a family meal when 'off grid' and would much prefare the option of having a Gas powered oven available for this reason.

There are plenty of 'plug in' electrical appliances that are fairly compact and give a decent oven effect should you wish to use one.

Hi both, we have a combi neff oven and it's great. Before that I've had combi microwaves and they've been great too.

I just wondered why manufacturers don't add a microwave function to existing gas/electric ovens they install into uk caravans so the separate microwave (with grill) can be removed.

I agree with this idea, but not sure I would want such a product from Thetford, given their past issues with oven knobs falling off, ineffective grills, corroded toilet components, failed fridge circuit boards...

If someone respectable made one I think it would make a lot of sense. Rarely would I need the oven and microwave at the same time.

I suggest they don't make such an item since the market is so small.

Surely caravan manufacturers would install them instead of wasting space installing a separate microwave and oven. If the price was right it's a no brainer.

Try running one on a 5 amp hookup then you will see why they don't put them in Van's.

Many vans have a low watt microwave already.

Maybe there's a safety law to stop a gas/microwave combi becasue it's dangerous if a fault occurs.
