The floor on our soon to be 3 year old Clubman is a little spongy for an area about a metre square by the fridge.

I though it was de-lamination and as the ‘van is booked in for its service mid-October I though I would give them plenty of notice so it can be fixed at the same time. Obviously with Lunar in administration there is no prospect of getting them to fix it.

Local workshop who have been doing quite a lot of Lunar warranty repairs said, “its not delamination - its because in an effort to save weight and a few pounds of the build costs Lunar took out about a third of the bracing for the floor. This means the joints between the flooring sheets is allowed to flex and eventually leads to your symptoms.”

We have done about half a dozen of these in the last year and the fix involves replacing the floor and providing extra bracing to prevent it happening again.

Evidently the cost of this fault taken together with the cracked back panels which have also been a common fault in Lunars has contributed greatly to their lack of profitability and hence the administration.

So I’m going to have to fork out best part of £2000 for the floor fix, the service and the replacement of the Aldi fluid which is about due.

Evidently Lunar aren’t the only UK manufacturer having problems - others may soon follow.

Can they not put extra cross bearers in from the underneath without touching the floor?

Hmm I wonder if the same degree of cheerfulness and good humour would be on offer if it were a Coachman problem?

Apparently Bessie the material used for the floor was of an inadequate strength and low quality hence the need to replace it and provide extra bracing. Or so I’m told and given my experience of contractors over the last year or so - I don’t believe the buggers!

If you bought from the dealer then the fact that dealer is in administration is of no consequence to you. Your contract is with the dealer and not the manufacturer and it is the responsibility of the dealer to sort out the issue. I would suggest that before approaching the dealer contact Which Legal Services on 0117 405 4924. The initial phone call is free. Even better if the caravan is on finance (HP).
Remember that goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description. Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety. The main word here is durability plus the fact that according to the workshop you are using it is a design fault therefore inherent.
BTW the new owners may still decide to complete any warranty repairs so do not rush to get a repair.
Also with a quote of £2000 I would definitely get a second opinion as we had a similar issue with our 2011 Lunar and the cost was £45!
Your choice now how to proceed.

I had this problem in our 2012 Lunar Clubman. It took me about 2 to 3 hours to fix at a cost of about £50. That was 2 years ago.

Spongy floors are unfortunately extremely common throughout the caravan industry whatever the make. I've had to repair mine in 3 different areas over 10 years. Your dealer is likely to be correct in saying that lack of wood supports in heavily trafficed areas is responsible, whether Lunar has saved a few pence on a few feet of wooden battens? I'm not sure. I assume all floors are constructed on a 'one size fits all' basis and therefore some layouts will suffer accordingly as the bracing is not always in the correct place. Whether I'd spend £2 grand adding said wood or do a 'Spongy Floor' dowels and foam kit repair must be a personal choice.

Thanks all - definitely food for thought. I think I may hold off until more is known of the fate Lunar - I’ll take it up with the dealer in the meantime although to be fair they were bloody useless once they got the dosh. The dealer is also the subject of a buy out so whether that will improve things or not remains to be seen.

Van isn’t on HP we paid cash for it and isn’t if funny how car and caravan dealers lose all interest in you once they get your dosh??

That is suicidal and will cost them dearly as they will lose a lot of sales. Also people will be dumping Lunars left, right and centre and probably get a poor trade in price.
What is more astonishing is that the sole director has no expertise in the caravan industry and there is no background information on him either! Is he going to be another Philip Green?

How come Lunar owners haven't been informed then? As of today Thursday 12th September still no announcements from Lunar Automotive LTD or Campbells, absolutely disgraceful.
