Hi everyone would like some info on how to try and combat condensation in the winter months when the caravan is not in use to try and stop the upholstery and fitting etc getting wet and mouldy. Thanks in advance.

We use a mobile dehumidifier, we bought it second hand, to reduce costs, we leave the electric on and use a plug in timer and set it to come on for about half an hour every hour

Maximise ventilation by emptying the lockers and leaving their doors open, pull upholstery away from the wall, make sure any vents are clear.

There are vents under the kitchen to let gas escape, usually a hole in the floor.

Remove bedding etc.

I don't use a dehumidifier or heat and haven't had a problem.

Good ventalation. Also check for damp. This was our first sign of damp when we found condensation while van was in storage. The damp was found at a corner of one of the windows, the seal had gone, caught it just in time.

I have located a small water ingress in the side window at the front of the van. I have a bailey paegent vendee 2004.there seems to be water collecting in the bottom or the grooves where the blinds slide up and down and a little found on the window rubber seal at the bottom of window.Any ideas people???

Make sure that all your ventilation holes are clear. We have ventilation holes under the front seats, under the sink and under the fixed bed. It’s really easy in these storage spaces to accidentally put something over the ventilation point and therefore block the movement of air. Also, leave the cupboard open where the ventilation hole is and also leave the front seats either raised, or with the front flap down depending on what style of seats you have to allow the air to move around. We try to use the caravan at least one weekend a month throughout the winter to keep it well aired and if we can’t get away for a weekend, we try to at least go to the storage site for an hour on a nice dry day and give it an airing.

Only thing I can recommend is what others have said, remove all soft furnishings and store them on your home. leave cupboard doors open to allow free circulation of air and make sure all vents are not covered up (most vents are in storage area, under seats, in cupboard etc)

It gets damp outside too during the winter, anyone using a dehumidifier should consider that the vents in a caravan allow air in and out so the dehumidifier could be drying out the outside air as its circulating.

Drying the world is going to be a substantial task for even the best dehumidifier

We've had a motorhome followed by a caravan for 16 years and never done anything. We even leave sleeping bags and pillows stored under the benches. We store our van at the side of the house so it is,perhaps, sheltered a bit. We don't use a heater or dehumidifier. If the van became damp I'd suspect water ingress.

we store our van indoors most of the year but for the weeks its outside - like now as we have just been away - we close the thermal blinds at night, put heating on very low 24hrs and open all cupboards, drawers etc to ensure a free flow of air . Also put the winter covers the fridge vents

my van sits outside all winter complete with bedding and everything else.. i never see signs of condensation..

i am inclined to think if the van is dry condensation wont be a problem..

i that is me have 6 marg boxes cleaned dried and 1/4 filled
with, cheap house table salt, when damp take out, put in 6 more,
take damp ones home, put on heater, when dry put lids on, till
next time, about 10 days,ps it is working for me,please dont cry
makes the bedding wet, ok,pj

When we had the motorhome I used to block off the vents and put in the dehumidifier. After the initial filling of the 1.5 litre tank a couple of times over a few days the amount drawn from the air would slow right down to nearly nothing then I would remove dehumidifier and open the vents.   Did this two or three times over the winter and never had a problem in 12 years and I will probably do the same now we have a caravan.
I know all the arguments against dehumidifiers, drying the world, waste of time ect.
All I know is that it was aprox 5 litres of water that was not now in the air in the MH and anything that you can do to aid this can't be bad
Nice one with the salt Retford1 I know a few people who do that
