Hi all..a bit long winded this sorry...
After having a mix of tents, campervans and motorhomes, we are now toying with the idea of dipping our toe into getting a small(ish),narrow(ish), *cheap(2k?) caravan.
(*we feel that things like Eribas are a bit too pricey for our first foray)
Initially it would only really be for use at music festivals, with maybe the occasional added weekend away if we take to it.

But we would really like to be able to occasionally take our 4 year old Grand daughter with us, so we have been looking at 3-4 berth vans BUT we don't want to fall into the trap of getting something that ends up being too big for just use (and she may not come that often anyway!)

So,can anyone point us towards(or has anyone DIY'ed) an additional, "dismantlable" (is that a word?) high level child's bunk/hammock that could attach/fasten above one of the existing beds of a 2 berth van?
I'm handy enough(with a background in fabricating) so DIYing from scratch wouldn't be a problem, I just wondered if such things already existed?
( We would probably use an awning/shelter/tarp of sorts BUT we wouldn't want to have to rely on using one, we'd prefer to be able to "live within" the 'van, if needed).

Thanks

Depending on the age of the child, you may be able to use the front benches as two singles and make a bed up using the back rests or an air bed/SIM on the floor for the child to sleep on. Just be aware though that any heating vents/ducts at the lower floor level would prevent this as they would be blowing hot air onto soft furnishings and bedding which would be a fire hazard.

Our last lightweight Lunar caravan was a dedicated 4berth with a double up front and transverse bunks/single dinette across the back yet was still only 460cm long.
It was a very practical layout as we could leave the front double fully made up and use the Dinette end for seating and dining with little effort. It also provided a space to allow our granddaughter to play and sleep without he intruding on our space at the front of the caravan when she needed to sleep during the day or early evenings.

If you are unfamiliar with caravans, you may be unaware that many vans rated at 4 berth are truly only 2 plus 2s, that's 2 adult size beds and 2 child size (and limited weight rated!) beds in the form of convertible fold up/down bunks, usually in the dinette area. A glance at the specification may lead you to think it's a 4 full size bed oversize van for your needs, but the reality is it may not be!

If you're used to MH and campers, you're used to cramped spaces, so a caravan won't be a shock. The easiest place to get a feel for what's on the market to suit your needs and budget is 'Caravanfinder', enter the filter criteria to narrow the search results.

Don't forget to take into account the towing capabilities of your car AND any towing limitations on your driving licence

Hi..
Thank you very much for your responses..

Yes, we've seen the 4 berth layout with the small transverse dinette/bunks layout and it does seem very versatile..
..but us being used to "crammed" spaces, we are mindful not to get too *seduced by the space a 4(or 2+2)berth caravan will give.
(* it was for that very reason that for a few years we were wallowing around in a 7mtr fixed bed,over-bodied MH ).

I'd rather not fill up the floor space with the additional(my!) bed if I could help it BUT it is a workable option that we hadn't really considered, if I'm honest.

(We're fine with our licences, 'both been driving since early '80s. A car that's up to the job of dragging a 'van across a muddy festival site, is something else on the things-to-get list. }

So,do I take it that the fitting of after-market or DIY bunks is not a usual "thing" amongst owners then?

Thanks

no caravaners tend not to put bunk beds in themselves, mainly due to the hassle of trying to find the woodwork behind the boards to get a strong fixing point. an option would be to use a folding camp bed that you can just pick up and put out of the way quickly, rather than messing around with airbeds, which you could put in the gap between the 2 seats, but in all honesty, if you made the front bed up from the 2 sofas, there is more than enough room for a 4 year old to share with, which I can guareentee no matter what diy you did she would still end up joining you anyway

Many 2 berths can sleep 3 on the front made up as a double if you sleep in line with the van rather than across.

You could also sleep in the awning or a pup tent if it's only occasional.

Making a bunk at the front may not be easy as the walls are all window. It could have to be supported by the high level lockers but could also have legs down to the bed box below. Those lockers may also be too deep to allow space under for a bunk.

TBH, l have never come across a caravan that has had retro fit bunks added, and we have looked around a fair few secondhand ones in our long caravan career before we were able to afford to buy new. Our very first caravan was a 1982 Monza 3.60s, a tiny lightweight caravan which actually slept 5, using stretcher type bunks over a pull out double bed and a very narrow transverse double at the front that was just over a metre wide!

The construction of caravan walls other than the points where factory fitted cabinets and fittings are attached mostly by inserting wooden noggings into the frame are very flimsy and weak indeed, as are the floor panels, they are not really strong enough to weight bear a persons weight through one narrow point such as a traditional metal bed leg. Weight is often spread over a larger area by the use of the box base locker sides, with upper bunks attached to dedicated battons installed during manufacture.

Finally, if anyone is considering sleeping on the floor of the caravan, it’s good to keep all doorways clear in case of emergencies during the night, including the outer door/fire exit, but also a sleepy child desperate for the toilet who may give you a bit of a wet wake up call as they climb over you enroute!

Hi again..and again, thanks all for the input...
I think the retrofit bunk thing is probably a none starter (and was probably as much about me and my inclination to "fettle" as anything else).

So as it stands, for our first-time 'van, we're favouring a small-ish 2 berth, with me sleeping on the floor or in an awning/pup tent as/when required.

(Well, that's today's idea, anyway!

Hi Pepe, just a heads up that the Pup-tent idea may work out difficult and expensive on some campsites, they tend to charge for it as a separate unit, and sometimes a separate pitch away from the Caravans and within the Tent field area of a campsite.

We have a 5 berth caravan but sometimes fit 6 people in. We make up the front bed and sleep with 2 adults on the benches and a child in the middle. The child is now taller so we take out the front drawer unit and put a board across to fill the gap, then put a piece of foam to fill the gap.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.

The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.

What about looking at a folding camper?
Lightweight to tow, the smaller ones are easy to manhandle.

Hi..
Yes, getting a small (simple) folding camper is something that we have toyed with for many years, even whilst we still had the motorhome/s (not as a full replacement for them but to supplement them, dependant on the type of "stay"). I liked the idea of them still having a strong "camping" feel.

BUT my better half reckons, that we could/would end up with worst of both worlds..
i.e Having to store and tow(as a caravan) but still having the faff of putting up/taking down and dry out etc, as with a tent...
I still can't fully dismiss something like a Raclet Quickstop or similar.
(and at one stage, we really did like the idea of a Camplet but after a run of really muddy festivals, we decided that something more "off the ground" would be better for us).

The benefit of a folding camper is that they are so much easier to tow and store than a caravan. Any time lost in erecting them is made up by time saved on a journey.

A Dandy is a type of folding camper using insulated PVC for some of the walls and roof. The rest of the walls are solid. The PVC can be left wet for months without any harm unlike conventional folding campers which are canvas or acrylic.

For £2000 a dandy may be a good option rather than an old caravan.

You could have a 2 berth van with the longer seats and you and your husband sleep either side and pull out the slats in the middle and your granddaughter sleep on there with the back cushions on it. We took 3 grandchildren away in a 4 berth diner type. Two slept on th e dinette made into bunks and the 10 year old slept in the middle. It worked ok but if you may have to go to bed at the same time or sit outside if weather permits.
