Just purchased an old van to restore. We first believed it was from the mid-late 80s but cannot locate the VIN/CRIS. The only date I can find is printed on the tow bar section, and it says 1992 (specifically AL-KO DGM 11716 R2/S 1992). But I thought that if it was 1992 onwards that all windows would have the CRIS number on them, and this is not the case.
The only other identifiers on the caravan are the words Swift and Ruby, but google can't seem to find any Swift Rubys of that age.
There is also no plaque by the door.
Can anyone advise where else to look? I only really want to find it so that I can know what model and year we have.
The Al-KO chassis number, the VIN is on the centre of the axle cross tube. Depending on age, it could be stamped into the metal or on a label.
If I recall correctly, it is on the front face of that big tube, but awkwardly right in the centre under the van. If not front it is back.
Take a bit of blackboard white chalk with you before crawling under with torch, pencil and paper if available. Rubbed into the stamping makes reading a bit easier.
Edit:
Tipping van up till the rear is just off grounding helps giving room to crawl under, ensure it is safely supported. Alternatively, use tow car to haul van tyres up on some decent depth wood blocks/planks, but safety must be first consideration. Therefore leave car coupled so it can't roll off them.

The CRIS registration scheme WAS introduced in 1992 but I believe that only the side windows were etched.
If there is no identification on either of the side windows they could have been replaced due to damage or if the caravan was stolen so I suggest that you contact the authorities such as CRIS and provide them with the caravan's VIN number as they should have the corresponding CRIS number on record.

Our caravan is a 1992 model and all the windows are marked. May not apply to all makes and models of course.
You're probably right saying that about makes and models because our first small 2 berth caravan was a 1992 Coachman and the CRIS number was only etched on each of the side windows. Those two windows were the only ones that had roller blinds as well as the front ones only had pleated curtains.
