Never travelled with pets, but a quick google search shows that yes, you can take a dog (for a cost) but it will have to stay locked in your car for the whole crossing. And as you know, you will not be able to access the car deck during the trip. I think this is why most people travelling with pets use the tunnel.

Never taken my dog abroad, but used many ferries to continent, and the answer is a qualified yes! Exact terms depend on route/ferry, but vary from must stay in vehicle, to allowed in some cabins/kennels, think it depends on crossing duration and boat. Look up the individual companies, the route, and the actual ferry doing the crossing. Think those in vehicles/cabins may have to be in suitable crate/carrier, but wouldn't swear to that.

Can't remember now, as long time ago, but on one of our Portsmouth-Bilbao crossings, definitely a dog exercise area on deck, but I think that may have been the now defunct P and O ferry.

The dog doesn't stay in the car on the Brittany Ferries Spanish xing they have kennels on board and an exercise area. Some ships have pet friendly cabins but they get booked very quickly.

Shorter crossing to Brittany and drive down - a bit less than the tunnel and less stress in the car for the dog on what can be a very noisy car deck?

We've crossed many times with Brittany Ferries from Poole to Cherbourg with a dog - they stay in your car/motorhome/caravan and just snooze the crossing away (4hrs 30 on this one). On the Portsmouth to Caen crossing they either travel in your car etc or there are some pet friendly cabins, but dogs are not allowed in public areas. This is also the case on the Portsmouth - le Havre crossing. On the Spanish routes there are onboard kennels with a dog exercise area, though we have not had experience of these.

There are kennels and dog walk area on the Pont Aven, Plymouth to Santander. Or, depending on timetable, Plymouth to Roscoff and drive down, two days will see you over the Pyrenees.

But I would certainly wait until the situation is clear, you do tt want to be in Spain if CV19 flairs up again.

Brittany Ferries has a page on it's website offering advice and choices for taking your pet on it's ferries. May be worth a look .

Dogs are allowed on the Brittany Ferries routes to Spain, they either go in a kennel or a pet friendly cabin which get booked very quickly. They are NOT allowed to stay in vehicles on the decks. Brittany ferries also run all through winter, I think it’s two or three sailings a week from Portsmouth. We use it regularly.
