I'm assuming you have tried things like putting the awning at the back of the van (if you have an awning) and taking things from the front locker and moving those to the back of the van?

For me I tried in vane to get the nose weight on my first car somewhere close, in the end there was nothing I could do but live with it, I just made sure not to load the boot of the car with too much stuff, and anything that could go in the van went into the van.

Unless you are going to tow with the caravan empty it doesn't really matter what the nose weight is. You need to have the correct nose weight when the caravan is fully loaded ready to go away, there are lots of articles by the major clubs and magazines that may help you.

I've got a nose heavy van when 'empty' (I think the vast majority probably are!), compounded by a light tow hitch load figure. You sort it by careful loading of stuff into the van. Nose heavy, or light (don't think I've ever come across that!) on an empty van should be used only as a starting point indicator of how to load your van.

What you don't ideally want is really heavy stuff right at the back of the van (even if it gives you the correct nose weight when static), because when moving that will increase the risk of the van snaking. Place really heavy stuff like awnings low down over or very near the axle where it has no negative affects on towing stability.

If I'm not mistaken there is no front locker on your van, with your gas cylinder side mounted over the axle, so all the usual 'de-load' the front locker advice is not applicable, but that also means your 'overweight' is likely minimal, and hopefully just strategic packing of normal stuff into van will cure the issue. Just try not to place anything heavy, or a great accumulations of lighter stuff, forward of the axle unless balanced by equal weight behind axle (like a see-saw).

As a warning, you do not want the nose to be too light either, it causes all sorts of nasty towing issues!

Good luck.

I'd certainly second that about "nose-light" Monty. The only time I've ever had any towing issues, albeit very minor, was when I picked up our current caravan from the dealer. As I was only towing it home about 15 miles, I didn't bother checking the nose-weight. I couldn't have done anything about it anyway. As the caravan was old, and a bit of an unknown quantity, I kept the speed down to 45-50 mph which resulted in my being overtaken by a couple of big trucks on the dual-carriageway. As a result of this, it did develop a slight wiggle. Nothing serious, but definitely noticeable.

However, on our first trip away with it, loaded up with all our usual stuff and with the correct nose-weight, it towed like a dream. Barely noticed it was there. It turned out that on that first drive home the van had been well below the recommended nose-weight, I measured it when I got home, so maybe it's just later vans that can be nose-heavy when empty, as mine certainly isn't.

Colin

Welcome to the Forum.

As others have said, check it when it is loaded ready to go, not empty.
What are you using to check the nose weight?
It may be worth double checking the measurement is accurate.
Bathroom scales with a block of wood will give you something to compare two readings.

Just a thought, when checking the nose weight, ensure the tow hitch is at the correct height (matching the car tow ball height - see below), otherwise the reading/load will be irrelevant to the load placed on the tow ball. There can be quite a significant difference in measured weight if nose high or low, and you are generally looking to be within a few Kg or so of correct weight on the tow ball. Bathroom scales with a piece of wood directly under the hitch as a spacer are perfectly adequate for the job.

To quote the Caravan Club (CAMC) "Make sure that the centre of the towball is between 350mm and 420mm from the ground (when the towing vehicle is fully laden to its gross vehicle weight). This is a legal requirement, so we advise you double check."

A friend had a Bailey caravan, I don't know which one it was but their nose weight was high. I have seen other comments saying the same. It turned out Bailey had mounted it on the wrong place on the chassis although Bailey denied there was anything wrong for a long time. This is going back quite a few years.

Hi, I have a Pursuit 400/2 and the nose weight is high. The van probably starts off OK but then they bundle in a load of optional extras which all weigh the front down.

Ours has a front roof light (very heavy), steel spare wheel, Alko side jack and battery in front nearside bed locker, table storage and combi boiler in offside front bed locker.

Bedding has to go in the wardrobe.

Only the table and boiler are original equipment, the rest is optional extras bundled into a package.

I've tried moving all that to the back but it's such a short van it doesn't make a lot of difference. I've given up trying and just hitch it on and go now. My limit is 70kg, what's yours.

What is your limit Peter? It will be 70 or 72 and should not be exceeded, where did you get these figures from?

The noseweight alters depending on how you load so the noseweight when empty does not matter, the noseweight when towing is what's important. As mentioned before, how often are you going to tow the van when empty? I never go away with the caravan empty, it's always loaded.

Just out of interest, what are you towing with?

Rob

PS I've answered your new thread as well.

Hi Rob
As I said l have just got the van and I’m new to towing so Because of Covid 19 I have not used the van since purchasing it so while it was in storage I checked the nose weight before getting anything awning etc and the nose weight was 80 kg with nothing inside calculations from various sites said it should be 70,I now have an awning and things to go inside so maybe that may change the nose weight. I have a Ford kuga.
Peter
