Hello!

I've owned a campervan in the past, and have camped on tents since I was a teenager, but now that I have 2 kids (toddler + newborn) I'm looking to buy an old caravan to have family comfort whilst enjoying the outdoors.

I'll be towing it with a Citroen Berlingo, which allows me to tow 1300kg using the 85% rule (it's also the car limit).

I need 4 berth, and I'm unsure of the most suitable layout. I saw some models with 2 sets of "dining" areas, which I found interesting as it would allow some flexibility in terms of sleeping location.
Also thought bunk beds for the kids are quite the space saving option. And the double bed seems awesome, but maybe takes up too much space on a low weight limit I have.

I can't spend much money. So I'm looking at 4k tops, which from what I can see buys me a 2004 caravan at best.

Now.. I don't know much about the brands, the risks of buying a 16 year old caravan (besides moisture, which from what I understand you need to visit with a meter) or where exactly to start. Dealers? eBay? (I'm in TW12 l, Hampton London if you know a good dealer around)

Anyways.. some Q's:
- Best brands
- Suggested layout for a "low weight model". Pros and cons of different things?
- Risks, warranties, pitfalls
- Any models on that budget that I should definitely have a look?

Thanks so much!!
Rafael

Our kids are all grown up now but I do have the Peugeot Partner Teepee which is similar to the Berlingo. Is yours the later Berlingo (2009 on) as the earlier ones only had a 1100kg towing limit. Is it the Diesel as the petrol ones might struggle a bit. Also you need to be careful because you only have a tow ball limit of 70kg which is quite low.

As for layout I would suggest the side dinette centre kitchen and end washroom. That gives a good practical layout and appears spacious in the living area.

The ones with centre washroom and wardrobe with a dinette at each end tend to look rather cramped in my opinion. Also the end washroom is excellent for dressing and changing as you just step in there with no need to lower all the blinds in the van.

Have a look at the Bailey Ranger 510/4 or 470.4 which will show you the layout. All the manufacturers did that layout as it was very popular for families.

All manufacturers do about 3 ranges which depict the cost, weight and level of luxury. Each range comes in a variety of layouts. For your tow limit and budget you will be looking at the budget range which for Bailey will be the Ranger. The 510/4 was about 1200kg I think.

Thanks!! Very helpful!
It's a 2018 Berlingo, Diesel Blue HDI 100bhp.
Will Double check trying to find the info in the car. Found 1300kg online.
Didn't know about the 70kg limit on the towbar! Great point.

Will check all the info out.
Thanks again!

I also would recommend looking at the Bailey Ranger 510/4 which has the side dinette layout with a nice size end washroom. We bought one new in 2009 so we could take our grandchildren and they loved the bunk beds. But they still made this same layout for earlier years.
Easy to tow as lightweight for its size. We sold it in 2013 when they stopped coming with us for a caravan with a bit more luxury but we still stick to the side dinette layout for just the two of us.

Should get newer than a 2004 on that budget but best advice I’ll give is when you go to see one take a damp meter, and don’t be afraid to use it. Every seating area, cushions off and check in the lockers m, everywhere you can access check.

Have a look at budgetcaravans.com they have a couple of vans in your price range that look lovely and will be serviced before collection. also there is a 2006 Bailey 4 berth on eBay for £3900 that again looks lovely.
Good luck

Thanks for all the very helpful messages!

I've noticed lots of the ads show the 'connector' of the caravan to the car (which I'm sure has a proper name!).
What should I be looking for? No rust? Anything else?

Thanks!!

unfortunately the noseweight is going to be your downfall as its only 56kgs max, and you wont get a caravan the size you need that low, perhaps a folding camper might suit your needs better?

So I have been doing research for about 5 years on entry-level caravans ... and finally bought this year. Mine is super light-weight and old! But clean as a bean and has everything we needed. My wee bit of advice was I had looked at a lot of different layouts ... and originally saw the same van as ours 5 years ago but with a tiny double at the back with a kind of diagonal washroom. I wasn't ready to buy then ... but this year bought the same kind of van (ABI Marauder 400ct, 1988 ish) with bunk beds at the back. I had been looking at vans with the bunk beds on the side and originally thought that looked like a good plan. But having tried out the van for a few days on the road outside the house, whilst I waited for my towbar to be fitted, I realised having the kids coming in and out into the body van would have been a pain, compared to the popping in out of the van and sitting at the back of the van was vastly better, whilst the adults sat at the front of the van. Anyway, good luck.
Katy

I'd agree katymg if it's older kids but the OP has a toddler and a baby who would not be coming and going on their own and you would want them close.

With an end dinette, there would be a side washroom which will be small and not so easy to wash a child in. The side dinette gives a lovely spacious end washroom with a big shower cubicle.

The Ranger 470/4 would suit but it is about 18 inches shorter than the 510/4; that length is taken out of the front seating. As its a toddler and a baby, I doubt the toddler would be old enough to sleep on the top bunk until age 8 or so. This means the baby will need to sleep in the double bed with Mum & Dad which will be much more roomy in the 510/4.

Good point. Kids are much younger than mine. So it depends on how long you intend keeping the van. A wee double at the back actually might be better for toddler & baby until much older. Or side bunk with baby in with mum and a dad. Being a camper all these years we just all piled into the bedroom if the tent. Caravans, you need to think about.

That's all very insightful! Thanks!
I guess big toilet/shower with side bunk might be best for me.

I need to double check that nose weight limit now.. heard 70+kg from someone else. Will review car documents now.

Thanks all!
