CRiS, anyone used this or is it a waste of £15? Would your insurance company have your van details and VIN number from new, including past owners? They do it with cars so quite doable for vans.

The effectiveness of CRIS in the case of used vans is entirely dependant upon the previous owners having registered with CRIS.
Some are of the opinion that they wouldn't want their van recovered if it were stolen so they don't register it.
The only real advantage,as far as I can see,is when it is resold the purchaser has some reassurance that they aren't buying a stolen van.

all the windows are stamped
if it was stolen (whatever you paid for it you have lost your money) because it will return to the previous owner .
i would have it done for a peace of mind and it only £15 (Peanuts)

I presume a dealer would check this before buying. Good points, so thank you both. They now have my £15.

I registered mine when I bought it, even though it is old and I have no idea how many owners it's had. I don't think it was many though from the condition of it. It's only £15, and it's a one-off payment.

I also found out that it's a 1992 not a 1994 as I was told by the dealer who obviously hadn't checked. Not that it matters at that age anyway.

Best Regards,
Colin

Colin, can I ask, did you receive a report on your van plus past owners? If I do not hear anything from them, would it be a case of the past owner did not register, not stolen and not been in an accident?

CRIS does not tell you if it's been in an accident.

No nothing, just a note of registration with them. I took it that as they told me nothing else, it hadn't been previously stolen or anything like that.

And here was me waiting for a full report with previous owner details.
Not to worry, at least I can prove I am the owner. I did notice they had a police "sign in", I don't think they recover many stolen vans.
Thanks all for your time and comments.

My updated for my ownership Cris registration (for my 2016 s/h, registered from new van) just had 'No of previous owners - 1' without any further previous owner details.

It's true enough not too many stolen caravans get recovered, possible because they are not stolen to resell, but to be used by a notoriously lawless sector of the population, so never come under proper scrutiny again.

But since 2016 all UK built caravans have had a Electronic RFID chip secreted about them as part of the Cris scheme, it can be purchased as a update for earlier built vans. Now allegedly it can be read from 6m away by a passing police car at up to 60mph, so if the police spot a nice looking van on the back of a beaten up old Transit pick-up being towed on a road, you'd hope they will give it a scan and see it it shows up as stolen! - not holding my breath they do, but it's step in the right direction.

Another benefit of Cris registration is if you take your van outside UK on Hols. As with carrying your car registration documents to prove registered ownership, you are supposed to have proof of ownership of your caravan too, and the Cris registration document does that nicely, closest other document would probably be a bill of sale with your name and address (if you had one!), but not going to be quite so convincing as a Cris registration.

We have it on ours, it’s useful even if it’s just for the RFID chip on it to give the police a half decent chance of stopping thieves.
Whilst I’m not sure I would want it back, I certainly wouldn’t want some scumbag enjoying my caravan.

There is no official requirement to have a CRIS reg document when travelling abroad in fact most countries wouldn't even know what it was!

Absolutely agree, it may not carry any official status outside UK, but it's got to be more convincing proof of ownership than a scrap of paper some private seller scrawled out as a receipt! Otherwise what form of proof exists.

In decades of driving in various countries, never had to produce any driving related documental proof, but that doesn't mean that one day some jobsworth won't ask! For a paltry £15, Cris doc has to bring some peace of mind you've got some creditable semblance of proof.

It may give you peace of but as proof of ownership anywhere, other than the UK,it wouldn't be proof of ownership.
Anyone with a computer and Printer could create a convincing document certifying proof of ownership and as the foreign authorities have no way of accessing the CRIS database they would have no way of checking.
The only real advantage of CRIS is to purchasers of used vans or to sellers as proof of the history of the van but as there are a lot of vans that don't get registered with CRIS on change of ownership even that isn't infallible.

A lot of police officers i work with have a Cris Login password on their phones. Within a minute they can get the owner details, phone number etc. If the caravan is not shown as stolen but the person with it does not match the name on the database a quick call to the phone number may show it's in the process of being stolen without the owner even knowing.
