We have been enjoying lots of trips in our new (old) van and this week are bringing a friend of my daughter’s. We have attached the sleeping annexe to the awning so the girls can have their own space but the pitch is gravel and boy is it hard. I have put in those interconnecting square floor tile things and given them the cushions from the reclining chairs. They will probably not notice but I was thinking of sleeping out there myself when my mum comes so she can have the double bed and when I lay down in the annexe to see what it was like it did feel v hard.
I am trying to avoid a whole other set of stuff to store as the van is probably now at capacity. What are your suggestions? I could get an air mattress but I am reluctant - having given them up years ago whilst camping (got bored of them deflating in the heat inside a tent during the day or being v cold to sleep on without a million extra layers under you). Usually slept on a self-inflating mat whilst camping on grass but they don’t pack up that small and I really don’t think it will soften the gravel enough.
On a hard floor an air mattress is definitely the best solution plus the air underneath gets warm from body heat. It also folds flat so takes up less storage space.

My lad sleeps in an annexe on our awning. He loved it. He sleeps on a fold up camp that I use for Scout camps. It’s from Decathlon & it is really comfy. Just being up off the floor makes it so much more enjoyable.
