We are new to caravan holidays (grew up going on touring caravsn holidays), bought a 2006 sterling Eccles from a close friend who states good caravan no issues. We are just home from our first weekend away this morning on getting up it felt like our clothes were cold/damp but on sitting out for a 5/10 minutes this seemed to have resolved. Is this normal? Same thing on arriving home and stripping bedding pillows /duvets cold/damp feeling after being stored underneath seats. If this is normal is there a solution for this? Thanks for any advice

friend or not, did you check the caravan of have it chcked by a mobile engineer? for damp, or have you seen any service history with the damp report on it?

mind you seeing as its done nothing but rain for a couple of days now and still to warm to put the heating on that could be the reason, but i would say first thing is to get the caravan checked over

No this is not normal and would least expect this with recent weather. We have owned caravans for 48 years and never had one with this to occur.

I'm sorry but I have to agree that it does seem unusual. We leave bedding in all winter and it feels cold but not damp.

I would strongly suggest that you get an Approved Workshop Scheme to check the caravan as soon as possible. You may have damp.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Just a thought before assuming the worst, could it be condensation from moisture being breathed out all night by two people? Warm air can hold quite a lot of moisture in it, so when that air gets cold enough, (down to what's called the 'dew point') the minute water droplets will be released and fall onto anything beneath it, just like dew on the lawn.

That may be the effect you are experiencing and not necessarily dampness through the fabric of the caravan.

You can invariably smell damp on entering...very much like 'wet dog'. If its as damp as it sounds, any half decent meter will show it up. Pointless paying out for an 'expert' on a 14 year old van at this stage.

Thank you for the replies. We have ordered a meter. Along with this we have thought of a few things that could of caused it i showered the children with the bathroom door open at night therefore water may of accumulated. We have no other signs of damp.

showering in the caravan wont cause things to feel damp, not to that extent, wet coats and kids in and out might do, but you would/should have your roof vents open even overnight anyway

when you get your damp meter you need to sharpen the probes and then they need to be pushed thr the wall board, best if you can do this in places that are hidden so if there is a trim you can move or under a rubber seal etc. but definately in lockers and around anywhere that would have an opening to outside
