Hello there
Can you help. We are completely new to caravanning and have ordered a 2020 caravan from a main dealer. When we placed the order they told us that we would have a new caravan built on 14th Sept For us to collect first week in Oct. We’ve now been told our caravan is now in stock and is ready to be picked up from 7th sept - this has thrown us and we’re concerned that being a bit wet behind the ears we might be being palmed off with something we shouldn’t be accepting - the sales consultant who booked our caravan build for 14th sept has now left and we’re being told that they would never have booked a build for us and it’s clearly a misunderstanding - any thoughts on what we should do? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill - it’s just so unexpected.

You have not said who is making your van, but if one of the major firms then a look at Utube a factory visit may be of interest to you.   Most are built on a production line.     The caravan channel has been to more than one.

Sorry I'm a bit confused, what do you mean by "we might be being palmed off with something we shouldn’t be accepting" and also "we’re being told that they would never have booked a build for us and it’s clearly a misunderstanding"

A bit more clearer, well certainly for me, information would be helpful and also who is the manufacturer.

Personally having ordered new caravans before I have never heard of booking a build slot, the dealers have a list of when certain models will be coming off the production line and base delivery dates around that.

I presume you and the dealer have checked that your car is capable and legal to tow the caravan you have ordered and that you have the correct categories on your driving licence to be legal on the road (I ask this as I have no idea when you passed your driving test or what car and caravan we are talking about).

Sounds as though you have been lucky and getting yours a bit early. Perhaps the production line has gone ahead of what was anticipated, or maybe the dealer has had a cancellation.
Now, if the fealer had promised delivery by 7th September and then phoned to say it would be delayed until October, then you would have been disappointed and probably angry.

Enjoy you caravanning, you now have a few extra weeks this year.

Unless you specified some specific options with your order, like optional upholstery upgrade, I'd be surprised if your van was literally built to order, they are with few exceptions just banged out on a production line as stock vans.

Covid impact to general business may have interrupted production processes, and production may have been scaled back from normal rates. But there has been a bit of a boom in interest in caravans lately with 'staycation' holiday makers looking for alternatives to foreign holidays, this may have boosted the manufacturers order book and production ramped up to more normal levels again, bringing production volumes up and easing the supply chain. Then again, 'staycation' purchases may have had a rethink and cancelled orders, causing a surplus in supply.

Unless your van truly was a customized order and significantly different from a stock van, then I doubt you have anything to worry about. Some upgrades are dealer fitted rather than added at manufacture anyway, so may simply be that dealer has obtained parts earlier than expected.

Bluexpo97 thank you for your helpful reply. You’re right my post wasn’t very clear. The point was that we were told that there were no caravans in stock and the dealer had therefore booked a slot for 14th September for a caravan to be built for delivery to us in October - and then out of the blue we were contacted to say that a caravan would be ready to be picked up from 7th September. Being completely new to buying a caravan we didn’t understand why there had been a change and as the salesperson had also told us that demo caravans were sold at the same price as new ones we have been concerned that the one we are being offered may have been a demo van. We are clearly worrying unnecessarily

Having bought 2 new vans from Bailey, each time we were given a week when it would be built and then a date when they could hand it over to us.

The handover could easily last 2 hours while they show you how to use everything and fit you up with a battery, extension mirrors, locks, number plate etc etc.

With Covid I would expect planning in the factory could be a bit hit and miss. They rely on many components from many other suppliers to build them as well as labour etc.

Thank you Navver and Marg6 your advice is so helpful. Our caravan is a dealer version of the Swift Challenger X 850 - from all the responses we have received I can see that we’re good to go ahead with the purchase. It’s been hugely helpful to tap into the wisdom and experience of people who are familiar and experienced in the world of buying caravans - thank you all so much

well thats one hefty weight of caravan for your first time towing, i hope you have checked out properly that you can actually tow it? and not just relied on what the dealer is telling you as so often they dont tell the truth just to get a sale
