Gutted!!!!
On return from our first holiday in our caravan someone/something whacked the side.Driving along the M6 and there was a bang and the caravan lurched to one side, initial thought was a blow out, slowed down and pulled into a refuge laybye and inspected tyres. All tyre ok but did notice: tyre skid marks down the o/s/r corner, chem loo cover hinge damaged, scores and dents down the side. As this all happened so fast I did not see any vehicle swerving in my mirror as I was focused on controlling the car. I am insured through ceta but as a newbie it has soured my 1st ride out in our van. Anyone had dealings with hit & run claims?

I'm so sorry to hear that your unfortuneate experience on your first outing. On our daughter and family's first journey they were hit by a runaway sheep causing £3000 damage to their car and stopping them going on holiday. Fortunately the sheep was owned by an agricultural college and after a lot of hassle and time their insurance paid out.
I can't help with hit and run claims but all you can do is go through your caravan insurance and let them deal with it.
Don't let this put you off as I'm sure you'll have many happy outings in the future.

Very sorry to hear this. And scary.

From the description of the damage, it sounds like it could be a stray wheel off a lorry. I had this happen to my car on the M42 - two wheels came off a lorry I had overtaken and ran down the nearside of my car - one just scraped the side leaving tyre marks, the other temporarily lodged under my front wheel arch. The lorry driver wasn't even aware and it was half a mile away on the down slope the wheel stopped.

Don't be put off, though, please.

report it to the police, they will be able to check the cameras on the motorway to see if they can pick anything up of what happened, also if you post the location you never know people on here may have been travelling and their dash cameras picked it up

Don't let it worry you...it just adds to the experience and one to add to the list of anecdotes.

I've not had exerience of Hit&run, but have with a write-off claim. Sounds like you should be able to get it fixed.

Just a thought...have you reported to Police? They may have record of another vehicle if there was an issue with that or if it was regeistered by the camera operators if it showed up with them.

I'm sure if you report the incident to the Police it will assist in your insurance claim. However, you need to read the terms and conditions on your caravan insurance policy to see what you are covered for and should provide you with a claims contact number which is usually different to their general quotation number. Give them a call and they should tell you how to proceed to get the damage repaired.

Awful for you, hope it all works out well.

We have been thinking about a dash cam, this experience has almost persuaded me it would be a good idea.
You just never know what’s around the corner....so to speak.

I must say that after my daughters accident/incident with the damage by a sheep we invested in dashcam for ourselves and both our daughters.

Rapidly coming to believe that dashcams are essential pieces of kit - more important than some of the fancy tech now put in cars! However, they won't save you from some animal damage claims such as wildlife causing an accident nor where there is free-ranging livestock such as upland sheep or grazing Highland coos involved.

I'm only mentioning this because we've had a couple of people who have tried to claim off farmers after hitting such livestock and been very unsuccessful. I don't expect anyone on here to be so daft, but with many newbies (and general car drivers) venturing out into previously unknown to them territory as has happened this year, there's been an element amongst them who seem to think that all livestock should be penned and if they're on the road in the driver's way, it's the farmer's fault. My mate in the Dales lost a cow in calf to one of these types and a local has lost a couple of sheep on the hill.

Off-topic, however, with regard to dashcam, I bought one for my car in June 2017 when I bought a new car and was commuting to work everyday doing over 140 miles round trip.

Although I was confident about my own driving, I was less confident about other drivers on the road, as well as wildlife in country roads when it was dark.

The first one I bought was a cheapo one that was not very good with low lighting, and upgraded to a better one in October 2017.

I intend to share this dashcam with the new van and bought an extra quick release magnetic holder and cable for the van.

I toyed with getting a sat nav with dashcam and decided against it due to placement issue, as a dashcam ideally should sit higher up than a sat nav.

Some dashcams can record front and rear views, which may be a bit OTT if one is towing a high trailer or a caravan which blocks the rear view.

I fitted a cheap dashcam in the back of my caravan. Good job too, as I was rear ended in relatively slow moving traffic.
Even with the dashcam footage it still took 3 months for the other insurers to accept liability.
It took exactly one year before the claim was completed.
