100Ah 12V LITHIUM LiFePO4 Battery.. i have just bought one of these with the idea of simply replacing my lead acid battery..

they have their own battery management system built in so no real need for special chargers though the battery does come with one..

what i was wondering is.. will my car alternator deliver enough voltage to charge it while on the move..

does anybody use one or have any experience.. ??

an alternative would be to simply leave the lead acid connected up and carry the lithium battery loose.. i would like to lose the weight of the lead acid though..

Lot’s on youtube about the subject and how not to ruin your alternator when charging a LiFeP04 drop in replacement.

You will need to look at the vans charging system, as a different charging profile to that of SLA batteries is required for best results.

Also does your new battery have low temperature cut off, not all LiFeP04 drop in replacements have this feature on the BMS, and without it you must avoid charging when the battery is below 0 Deg C, to prevent permanent damage to the battery, you probably are aware of this already but I thought I would mention it just in case.

Having said that, some LiFeP04 drop in replacements have built in heaters, to allow charging at below 0 Deg C.

Which make LiFeP04 did you go for, or have you gone down the DiY route, the CALB 100Ah cells that come in that grey nylon case look ideal for a DiY build, but by the time you have added in the BMS and other bits, your still looking at £500 or so.

I'm certainly no expert, and quite happy to be corrected, LiFePO4 Batteries didn't exist when I did my electrical/electronics training, but a passing interest (price is still a little too rich for my liking to actually invest in one!) has led me to believe that generally Lead Acid chargers are NOT compatible with your battery, all to do with charge patterns and subtle voltage differences which are critical concerns. The onboard battery/cell intelligent management is an entirely different thing to charging management AFAIK, more to do with discharge management.

Before bunging it on van/camper (you don't say what you've got!), I'd do some more checking as wrong charger behaviour can irreparably damage the battery! I don't think the standard chargers built into caravans (and presumably campers etc.) are terribly sophisticated (and arguably barely suited to LA in the way they are used!) and are highly unlikely to have been designed with LiFePO4 Batteries in mind!

We have our own tame LiFePO4 Battery 'enthusiast' in our midst, he'll likely give you chapter and verse when he spots your post.

i have ordered two separate lithium units.. one is just a 100 ah battery the other an all in one 45 ah unit that in essence is a fancy power bank with a built in inverter

they are called solar chargers and cone pretty big up to 240 ah.. they are self contained units and can charge three ways..

solar panels can plug straight in.. from the mains with something like a large laptop charger or from a car socket..

i dont think a car alternator puts out a high enough voltage to fully charge them.. having said that i would be happy with half charge..

they can take 19 volts from a laptop charger or similar voltages from a couple of solar panels.. i assume the battery management system regulates the voltage going in..

i strongly suspect the voltages arriving at the charger from the cars alternator wont be high enough..

these things are coming down in price and do have some positive advantages.. they are much lighter.. can be charged much faster and run down much further.. the full capacity can be used without doing them any harm.. they also last much longer..

there is plenty of info on youtube but i cant find anything as regards just dropping one in a caravan.. he he

For info on LiFeP04 drop in replacement batteries check out geeky Philip and Will Prowse, two youtube channels that provide really good info.

I was inspired to make a portable power pack for in car use, that uses a 120Ah SLA leisure battery and 600watt Pure Sign Wave inverter, I will be replacing the 120Ah SLA battery when the cost of 100Ah LiFeP04 batteries come down, in the next couple of years or so.

I mostly use the portable power pack for running a 500watt kettle when out on the road at work, the power pack works perfectly for my requirements and has far exceeded my expectations.

The only down side is the weight of the unit at 26.5kg, using a 100Ah LiFeP04 battery would get the weight down to 16kg and provide almost double useable capacity, along with a serviceable life lasting at least ten times longer than my SLA battery.

Has the car got a SMART alternator as that may cause issues with charging. Also if you have a solar panel on the roof, can the controller charge the new battery?
I have thought of purchasing a 100Ah LiFeP04 to save weight, but have been very unsure due to aforementioned issues.

my 100Ah LiFeP04 (which arrived this morning) cost £479 off ebay and weighs 13 kg..

its about the same size as my existing lead acid battery just a lot lighter..

i suppose i should go the whole hog and bung a 100w or 200w solar panel on the roof..

the little floureon 500 wh power-bank also arrived.. this weighs about 6 kg and cost £312.. it has a 250 watt inverter and will charge directly from solar panels.. not cheap but very useful..

the little floureon is about 45ah and uses lithium-ion type cells.. very neat..

trog

ps.. my car dosnt have a smart charger my only doubt is whether or not the trucks alternator will provide enough voltage at the caravan to charge the lithium battery.. i think but only think it will maybe half charge the lithium battery.. there is a fair voltage drop due to the long cable run..

Yep, trog100 I was looking at the 100Ah battery from SOK battery, which is around the same price as the one you got, the big names like Renogy and RELION are around double the price, although you do get some extra features, with the big names.

U.S. made Battle Born batteries (Dragonfly U.S. branded) are branded as “Transporter Energy” in the U.K. and they are asking £1,200 for a 100Ah battery, which is around £400 more than the exact same U.S. product, no wonder they offering 0% interest on U.K. orders.

I quite like the look of the Renogy battery though as it uses 16 Pouch Cells, instead of 4 Prismatic Cells, although the top brands seem to use 120 Cylindrical cells.

It will be very interesting to see how the LiFeP04 drop in replacement market develops in the next couple of years, and I can see them coming as standard for many caravan and motorhomes, in fact at least one manufacturer already offers them as standard.

Yep blueexpo97, to be fair it was something I had noticed on YouTube whilst researching LiFeP04 batteries, the video was a motorhome manufacturer that was offering a modular system of LiFeP04 batteries that could start of as one battery, but more modules added at a later date.

I know that Hymer are offering LiFeP04 on some of there motorhomes, although I can’t remember if it was Hymer that I had seen in the video.

They are pretty expensive anyway so not surprised!
No way I would pay £400 or more for a leisure battery. Our lead acid is fine the solar panel or hook up on site keep it charged.

I am certainly glad there are trailblazers out there as technically these things are attractive though IMO need all the twists particular to our the application resolving, or at least refining. On the financial side, they are for us, even though big off EHU campers, still way off the mark. Now we can camp with autonomously with an 85 Watt solar panel and 80/90 Ah GEL battery, through the bulk of the season. So the only gain in our case would be a few kgs weight saving, but having a healthy payload that's in reality of little benefit.

I see the situation for motorhomers as somewhat different, as with their typical mode of operation an ability to take on a thumping fast charge whilst in transit is very beneficial. We caravanners, as standard, never get that fast charge option, as our puny car to van battery wiring simply is not there. Doing so would involve adding at least a stand alone wiring system and ideally using a B2B system.

Anyway, great you are out there sorting out what "works" or not, as come buying a new van it will be useful info to check that the van makers have "correctly" integrated this technology into their builds.

As a stand alone "power pack" I can see that being attractive, in that the van could be fitted with a less weighty LA battery, whilst the power pack could look after our evening's use of the TV and heating system, the real life big drains of energy. The power pack, then either left on site using the solar to top up if still being modestly drained, or put in the car for a trip out getting a high rate charge, so quickly refilled.

i currently have the lithium battery charging with my lead acid charger.. just if see if it works.. so far it seems to be doing okay..

the battery is at 13.8 volts with about 7 amps going into it..

13.8 volts is about 3/4 charged.. a full charge would be 14.4 volts.. the lead acid charger may get it up there or it may not i will know soon..

the thing is unlike lead acid these batteries dont need keeping at full charge all the time they are quite happy to be taken down to 10% or so and left there..

the usable capacity is probably double what similar AH lead acid batteries would give and they are maintenance free plus they last much longer are are about 1/3 of the weight..

i will fit a 150 watt solar panel on the roof.. this should remove the need for vehicle charging..

Yep spiritburner, my portable battery box is not just for boiling a kettle, although it does that brilliantly, and is what it gets mostly used for, but it can be used for all manner of other electrical items, so long as they are not rated to more than 600watt.

Total build cost for me was around £150 so I am more than happy with that, as the end result has far exceeded my expectations.

Just for the hell of it, I will be swapping out the 120Ah SLA battery for a 100Ah LiFeP04 battery, will go down the DiY route using 4 CALB 100ah prismatic cells (grey nylon case) and Dali BMS, just a case of waiting for prices to drop from £500 down to £250 for the build.
