I have to ask, Colin. Aside from it needing to be safe underneath to tow away. What quality of caravan can you expect for £500? As to me the underside (to be roadworthy) alone has to be £250 worth of that.

Hi Mick. It is surprising what you can get for under £500. There are bargains about & best time to buy is Sept/Oct because caravans are not wanted so attract less bids & most sellers are happy to let them go to the highest bidder whereas a more expensive caravan might be withdrawn if it fails to attract enough bids to reach reserve.

I paid £400 for a 1985 Monza in 2010 & I wanted it for a specific purpose. At the time I just needed a shed to sleep in for summer trips to southern France. I live in Essex & the caravan was in Hinckley. I bought it sight unseen from the owner who had used it for 3 years. In phone conversation with him he described caravan & said if it was not what he said it was then I was free to leave it.

The caravan was as about as basic as it could be with no fridge & no heater but I did not need either. The body was sound & dry probably because the caravan was small so therefore more rigid than something larger.

I took wheelbrace & tyre pump when I collected it & towed it home no probs. Tyres were more than 5yrs old but I just had to take a chance on that.

Luckily running gear was in good nick. Hitch damper was ok & so were wheel bearings & brakes. I serviced running gear. Repacked wheel bearings. Cleaned & adjusted brakes & had new tyres fitted. Inside I done a bit of fixing & painting & it was good to go. I towed it down to France & Spain for the next 5 summers then got my £1000 caravan. That was ok as well. Both caravans were sold back on eBay for more than I paid for them but tbf they were better caravans that I sold than I bought.

Last year after all these years with old sheds ‘tother ‘alf asked me what the f*** where we doing living in this pile of s*** when we could afford a new one? She had a point so we got the new Caravelair this year. Small & basic still but shiny & new & should last us the rest of our caravan life.

I suppose it is worth pointing out that more than twice I had blokes knocking on my door offering me cash for the old caravan standing in my drive. At least one I had to ask what part of no he did not understand. I guess their business model was door knocking trying to buy old sheds for a couple of hundred & doubling their money on eBay.

I’m sure they did nothing more than clean the caravan a bit before selling it so buyer would have to take pot luck if it was any good or not. Remember though whatever you buy on eBay if caravan is not as described you are legally free to walk away.

Despite what you hear about non payers being pursued through the courts the seller cannot sue a non payer for the sale price of the caravan but only their out of pocket expenses resulting from the non sale which would not be worth suing for.

Billy. I asked the question after Colin saying he'd gone over one thoroughly before buying it. (Yes - sounds sensible). But that left me thinking you cant expect to get something even near perfect, for next to bugger-all money. I suppose, if like you say, you bought a tin box with wheels and not much else, there isnt a lot to go wrong with it, outside falling to bits with damp. Which would be apparent from the off anyway.

Well I carried out a thorough check on it before I bought it and everything worked, and the underneath looked safe enough to tow. I towed it home, got the chassis serviced, fitted new tyres and went away on holiday with it. We had several holidays and short breaks with it for the next 4 years, then I sold it on for more than I paid for it. I think it all depends on what you want. If something modern that you can show off is what you want, then you won't find that for £500 I agree, but if you don't mind how old it is and aren't interested in showing off, there is plenty of choice out there, even for £500. There is also a lot of junk for quite a bit more than £500. From what I have read on this website, others have paid £thousands for caravans in much worse condition than my £500 one. Newer and more expensive doesn't necessarily mean better. Condition is everything.

Best Regards,
Colin

Cant disagree with that. Though there has to be condition and condition. A £500 van cannot be devoid of scuffs, wear, fading inside and out, perishing window seals etc. etc. Which is why i said you cant expect too much for the money. So must be accepting of some of the above in the 'all over inspection'.
