just watched a youtube video where the guy used a moisture inhibitor on the caravan hook up cable to protect it whilst in storage over winter.
Anyone here use this, if so what brand as I cannot find any.
Is it a good idea even?

you mean wd40 sprayed onto the connection? that is the normal way of doing it, not that i know anyone that has ever done it, no need really as the connections are inside a locker next to the battery

Googling moisture inhibitor brings up examples priced from £7.40 up to £26 for an aerosol can. I suppose it could be sprayed onto the plug & socket at either end of ehu cable but mine has never come to harm left in caravan all the time.

Cheaper stuff is called MP-90. Here

thats not the hook up cable hes on about! its the lead to attach the car lights to the caravan, so yes just spray wd40 on if you want

He just sprayed the the 13pin plug on the front. I do that using silicone lubricant spray which is ok for plastic. Does the same job. Also spray the socket on the car. Use silicone spray on all sorts of places. Toilet seals. Hinges door locks etc. I would have thought it inadvisable to use WD 40 or any other oil based lubricant as not good for plastic.

Not a problem I have ever encountered. My hook-up cable stays in a locker in the caravan all winter, and has done for the past 8 years. When I take it out and plug it in at home the night before we go away to boost the battery and cool the fridge, I know it is going to work, and it always has.

I doubt whether mains leads will ever need any protection apart from keeping them in a dry place. It's low voltage connections like the one on the car's tow-bar that may need some protection, and the corresponding plug/s on the caravan.

Oh, ok, in that case WD40 is as good as anything. I give mine a spray with that from time to time. I've normally got a can in the shed anyway so it's no problem. I have the old 2 x 7 pin plugs on my car and caravan, and my trailer also has a single 7 pin plug. Never had any real problems with them. Not sure about the newer 13 pin plugs and sockets as I've never used them.

Remember that WD40 attacks plastic and will make the plastic brittle after awhile. No fun going to hook up to go on holiday and the plug falls apart in your hands.

That's a good point worth remembering. I never knew that. However, spraying my sockets with WD40 is not something I do often. I think I've only done it once or twice on this caravan and we've had it 4 years. I did give my trailer plug a spray recently as I hadn't used it in nearly a year.

Yes. For caravanners the indispensable spray lubricant should be silicone based rather than oil based such asWD40. That way you are ok with anything from door locks to toilet seals & any other parts that include plastic. It keeps awning rail running smooth as well.

On heavier all metal parts I use spray white grease & silcone spray on anything else. I don’t use WD40 any more. Use a grease gun for nipples on hitch & handbrake. They should be done a couple of times between services imho.

For storage 13pin connector wrapped in tinfoil (just thought it would be a good idea) then big plastic bag over hitch then normal hitch cover over that.
