Hello all,

The storage site I store my caravan at have just reminded me it's up for renewal. Due to lots of issues I do not wish to renew this contract and have found a new site.
My question is am I allowed to move the caravan during COVID lockdown ? Can I move it to the new site, move it to my home or am I snookered and need to renew when I dont want to simply due to lockdown ?

Any ideas ?

Thanks

No, no and no.
Not essential, is it?
If you are totally desperate, you could use a commercial business to move it.

If you are seen towing a caravan I would put money on you being stopped by police as it is a totally unescessary journey. Is it worth a fine? Leave it where it is as the chances of using it is still very slim with sites shut and movement restrictions still in place.

A friend of ours was in the same situation, their van was on a seasonal site, and was asked to remove. he contacted his local authority, and the authority where the van was, then contacted both police constabularies.
he was given permission from all involved, and was issued a permit to move, which was dated for one day.

hope this helps

regards David.

Thanks for all your advice, a tricky one really. I would literally not speak or mix with a sole. Take it, drop it off and return home without speaking to anyone and although I may not be allowed to do that I can mix in a supermarket with 80 strangers ?!
I'll contact my local council to see what they say before I take the plunge.
Thanks

Yes the rules do seem a bit contrary at times don't they. But I agree with what others have said about being seen towing a caravan, it would be a magnet for a police stop if you were seen. Check with the council and the police and see what they say.

The rules are 'essential travel'. You are not renewing a contract, therefore your van has to be shifted. If you can prove - from the storage, that it has to be off site on a given day, i would move it without 'asking' anyone. You aren't doing it for fun, but necessity.

Completely agree with this. If / when pulled over by the Police, just explain the situation, make sure you have copies of paperwork to prove it, and you'll be fine

I can't offer any legal expertise on interpreting 'the rules' in this context and I rather doubt that even the people that wrote them could. However, my answer to "what would you do" is exactly what Mick S and Webmaster have said.

Thanks again guys, Its a tricky one but im tempted to just do it as a few of you have said. I really do not want to renew at this site due to lots of break ins and so need it off and moved.

I would move it, it is essential if the contract is up and it needed to be moved, I took the motorhome out yesterday for a run as it would sieze or battery would die if sat for to long, 2 police officers over took me on the m42, not even a double glance. I didn't mix with anyone, just took it out for half an hour.

"it would seize or battery would die" interesting theory! My motorhome sat for nine months and started first turn, solar panel kept battery topped up. Engine and brakes not seized.

Hi Creaky . Not sure that is a good idea ?
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to use it say once a month to get the shopping in from the supermarket for example ?

It says necessary journeys only. It doesn’t say in the regulations what transport you can use to get it ?

My car (4WD) I use for towing mainly , I make sure I use every week in lockdowns to get the shipping at least (we have a small run around car too) .
Leaving a vehicle standing in all weathers not being moved or started for 9 months can’t do the battery much good, could also potentially cause flat spots on the tyres.
The excess oil on the components would sink into the sump leaving the bare minimum on the engine parts too for starting after such a long period .

Being left standing for that amount of time outside I would have thought (depending on age of vehicle ) the seals amd rubber components not getting much use and drying out causing cracks and possible earlier failure than if being used regularly , especially outside with the constant temperature changes ?

Even on caravan tyres it’s recommended turning the wheels on extended periods of non use to avoid flat spots ?

Yes, I wholly agree as well Vic as it takes just a little common sense to do the right thing by getting authorised permission which eliminates the risk of getting fined.
