We’ve been considering buying a 2 berth caravan with a fixed bed and are out of touch with lay-outs. Can’t visit dealers due to restrictions but if anyone can make a recommendation I’d be happy to hear from you.
Ideally it would be around 3 years old and I’d look for a fitted mover and preferably bike rack but not essential.
We’re more interested in build quality and lay out than accessories.
Usually a fixed bed 2 berth will not actually be described as such because dinette will make up to a bed as well so it will be described as 4 berth even if most of them will be used as 2 berth.
If you want a small fixed bed then that will likely mean buying a European built caravan. Look at Caravelair sold by Marquis in the UK they may have what you want.
Thanks for interesting replies. Yes I thought we’d have to consider 4 berth.
Would far prefer fixed island bed but could consider alternatives. Condition is most important and capable of fixing a bike rack important too.
We have a swift challenger 560 which is a 4 berth with a fixed double bed at the back, a shower room across the middle and a living area at the front which converts into a double bed. So technically it is a 4 berth but we use it as a 2 berth. Recent swift’s have the bike rack rails built in at the factory so you just have to buy the appropriate rack and clip it to the rails. I’m not sure how long they have been doing this but ours is a 2018 and it has the rails.
We've got a swift 645 TA which we use for just 2 plus dog, just like the extra room, seen plenty of swifts with bike racks on the back.
Personally, I would pack a bike in the van somewhere in old blankets as feel too much weight on the rear end.
This might be of interest here. A bike rack can be fitted & I can vouch for the build quality. We bought a smaller Caravelair in July & used it continuously for over 3 mnths with no warranty issues at all.
Thanks again all.
I’m guessing if there’s fittings at the rear, as long as the caravan is balanced, correctly and nose weight checked, it should be fine.
The Caravelair sounds interesting but I’ve been trawling usual selling sites but they are like hens’ teeth anywhere in Scotland.
However there’s no big hurry to buy, we’ve got a U.K. van at home and another stored in France for French trips, so I’ll keep looking for a suitable replacement.
We have a Trgano Silver 420. 2009 model with fixed bed. It has been used, in normal times, 4 months a year touring France and Spain. Lightweight and because of the pop up roof is classed as a car (classe 1)on French motorways. Also low enough to go into the garage.
We have an Elddis Avante 454 which is a 2 berth with a fixed island bed. It took us a while to get used to the layout but we love it now.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
We have a Swift Challenger sport 584. It has a fixed island bed and end bathroom.
It's a 4 berth but practical for us to have the front seats as well as the bed.
We have a bike rack fitted to the rear of the van as this model has fixing points built in, swift post 2015.
We've had it now almost 6 years from new and absolutely love it.
Only issue looking at your tie car it wouldn't pull it.
We have a Sterling elite with the island bed at the back, shower room in the middle and front lounge for the two of us. It has a big fridge freezer which we like. Bike rack prefixed to the rear of the van. Have never used the rack though but have seen plenty of vans with bikes on the back. It's a very heavy van but our freelander2 has no problems towing it
------------- 40 years in the NHS and counting!!!!!!
