We love our fixed bed and would never go back however it does take up a lot of space in the Caravan so you need to weigh up space versus convenience!

Im 6 foot three and no bean pole. Our made up bed at the front is 6 foot 10 by 5 foot. I have yet to see a fixed bed of that size. It takes ten minutes to make it up and take it down. Hardly a life ruiner.
Would rather do that than have 35 square feet of living space lost to something I would only use when asleep and not conscious of what sort of bed it is.
Unfortunately our preferred layout of a side dinette isnt loved by manufacturers.

Why UK caravan builders cannot put in decent sized fixed beds I know not. My quite small French Caravelair manages to fit a 6ft 5 x 4ft 6 mattress across the front & a table & seats in the middle. It is a popular layout from plenty of European makes but oddly none in the UK.

Obviously in a small space there has to be compromise but it staggers me that caravans with a 25 grand price tag offers a bed that is less than what you have at home. It is personal choice but I would prioritise a good nights sleep over most other things.

We had a Swift Conqueror and loved it.
We have changed to an Elddis Avente 454 with a fixed bed and it is better. There are differences but having a comfortable bed to use without any work is wonderful.

-------------
We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

FIXED every time for me.. Coachman 645 laser.
In fact we have the fixed singles now, I love em, Not as wide as a normal single bed . I think they are 2'6'' not sure. However its all mine, lucky to get 18" of bed when we are in a double. Wife is very selfish when we are in bed.( she wants her half and half of mine).Wont admit to it tho!

😱😱😱..Choices, choices, choices.

Our last caravan (an elderly Compass Kensington) had a double dinette at the rear which we left permanently made up and put a standard double mattress on top. Fixed bed, but lighter!

We have had several fixed bed vans. We now have the Cadiz with two singles, both over 6 ft long and very comfortable. The van has a nice open feel with decent rear bathroom.

I've always had mixed feelings about a fixed bed as I like the idea but don't like the space it takes up unless you have a really big caravan. Ours is the biggest we can have without having to pay for storage, as a longer van wouldn't fit outside the house.

We have two long seats at the front of the van so we just take off the back cushions and put them at the back of the van, pull a pillow and sleeping bag out, throw it on the seat and climb in. It all takes seconds.

Best Regards,
Colin

If caravans weren't such a compromise, and size, towing weight, cost etc. weren't a consideration, I'd probably opt for a fixed bed IF it was of adequate size, but I've got convertible benches on my van and they only take seconds to convert into either single beds, or maybe a minute to pull out the slats and create the double bed, both are perfectly comfortable. I don't feel they are such a great inconvenience, certainly not the major exercise some people would seem to imply, maybe they make up full beds with sheets, duvets etc. whereas I'm happy with a sleeping bag. - I'm probably asleep before some of these people have finished faffing about making up fancy beds!

I think it depends on how big you are!

Neither I nor Rose are exactly small, and we have a king size bed at home because we could not get comfortable in a standard domestic double. I have yet to see a caravan that offers a fixed bed that's even as wide as a domestic double (4 ft 6), never mind larger (even in the latest vans that are 8 ft wide).

Conversely, the front lounge area in our old Avondale converts to a king size double in the space of about 10 minutes, and the addition of a £100 mattress topper means that I often sleep better on that than I do at home. I know which compromise I'd rather make!

Look at any UK caravan layout. It would not be difficult to design in full sized double or single fixed beds. Look at any German caravan layout. They manage full sized 2 metre long fixed beds double or singles so why can’t UK designers ?
