The tow hitch on our 2008 Bailey senator Vermont looks very worn out. The pads inside the stabiliser need replacing and the thread has gone inside the jockey wheel lever. I'd ideally like to replace the whole thing forward of the front hatch. Can I ask please how feasible is this? It looks like it's just a matter of 4 bolts + the brake connection?

why would you want to replace the whole thing? the tow hitch and jockey wheel are separate items, the "A" frame is part of the chassis, i doubt you can buy the whole thing ,as a piece.

How do you know that the stabiliser friction pads need changing?
There is only one way to truly test if they are effective or not and that's to put just the towball into the hitch and lock it in with the stabiliser handle. If it won't budge with a firm shove by hand then the pads are absolutely fine. However, you need to clean the towball and friction pads first with a spray of brake & clutch cleaner to remove any debris so to get a 100% surface to surface contact to achieve a true test.
Regarding the jockey wheel thread, it's very rare for the thread to wear out so are you sure it hasn't been over-wound to the end of the thread and the jockey wheel spindle has just fell out?
If it has then you need to screw the spindle back in but remember that the wheel itself will spin so you need turn the thread spindle itself to wind it back in. The solution is to rewing the jockey wheel up every time because it should lock into position whilst in tow otherwise the jockey wheel could slowly unwind which if it hits a speed bump etc. it could do a lot of damage.

Hi and welcome to the forum DrNuts. I doubt whether you need to replace the whole thing which will be very expensive indeed. All the parts are readily available to bring it up to nearly new condition. I have myself replaced worn pads and most recently the clamp handle and all is well. Yes, the parts are still expensive but not nearly as expensive as a new complete unit and will still do it's job admirably.

Dave.

An entire new Alko hitch assembly is just under £300. That comes with a standard hitch so add another £250 for a current Alko 3004 stabiliser hitch. The jockey wheel clamp is separate. Is yours bolted on or welded on ? As pointed out best bet is just to replace pads on existing hitch if worn out. What is the hitch damper like ? Does caravan bang against hitch when braking or is braking smooth ? With jockey wheel clamp it is usually the thread on the screw that wears not clamp so you may only need a new clamp screw about £5.
