The height to our awning rail is only 220cm, and so our air awning doesn't sit right, need at least another 20cm. Could I use ramps under the wheels to raise it the extra required when on site.
Thanks

In theory you could, but I don`t know of anyone who would. It`s a bit like having a leg amputated `cos you lost a sock.

The logistical problems of raising the caravan on both sides equally, then being able to safely use the corner steadies to do their job and keep the jockey wheel in contact with the ground doesn`t bear thinking about.

I`d be looking to swap the awning for one which is designed to fit a lower awning rail as getting it altered won`t be as easy (if it`s possible) as a `normal` framed awning.

20cm is a big increase in height. I know older caravans had lower roofs at the side than modern vans but that is more than I would expect.

It could be like our previous one, with a boat-shaped roof. That was very low at the sides, and was one reason why our air-awning wasn't suited. It wasn't the main one for us, but it certainly came into it.

Sometimes using ramps to gain extra height works in theory providing it's only a couple or three inches but to gain an extra 20 cms. is about 8 inches which the height of a ramp is much less than that so practically it's not possible. When caravans were manufactured with a boat roof only full awnings were made at that time so people used to measure the length of the awning rail from ground to ground then obtain the correct length awning they needed. Most caravans since the late 90's have been manufactured with a flat roof so the distance from the ground to the awning rail is greater, probably 20 cms. so all porch awnings should fit universally regarding the height. With reference to the above, you would be much better opting for a full awning instead as the perfect fit is going to be achievable as no matter what the rail length is you will find a full awning to fit.

With our previous caravan, a 1988 Elddis Tornado XL which had a boat-shaped roof, we stopped using the air-awning and went back to our poled porch awning which was fine. That was a Trio Sport Midi. We would still have used the Trio porch with our current Elddis which has a flat roof, but the door is in a different place and it didn't really work. I don't like having a pole in the middle of a window. We were very impressed with the Trio awnings though so we looked out for a second-hand Trio full awning, which is what we use now. It's brilliant, very strong and easy to put up, much easier in fact than that air-awning despite being twice the size.

Our 1989 Elddis 350/2 goes up about 4" on ramps to accommodate our Isabella porch awning. We have a double step up into the van and have no problems. The Isabella stood up to 50mph gales near Land's End a couple of weeks ago so we were well pleased with it. We previously tried awnings which were higher than the awning rail but could not get a good fit.

I think you may need to think this through a little more and maybe do some measuring to check that it's even possible to do as you consider.

Firstly raising 200mm (8"!) is way beyond scope of normal caravan levelling ramps, which typically only raise 80-100mm max! You are very much into realms of car maintenance ramps which typically lift 190-200mm, or custom made ramps. Will you even be able to fit these under your van skirts and clear of the chassis to enable use at all and safe use by centring tyre/clearing side rails? They would need a wide base for stability, car ramps are intended for use on level concrete floors, not soft uneven ground, you'd need some sort of robust flat plate under them, and probably need to anchor them to the ground to stop them slipping whilst you manoeuvred van onto them.

Your corner steadies will almost certainly not extend far enough to cope with extra 200mm height, so you will need to place high packing pads under those too.

Once you've raised whole outfit 200mm your jockey wheel will be well clear of the ground too, and again need packing pads under it. It is not recommended to take all the van weight on corner steadies, it should still be putting significant weight in the jockey wheel! How are you going to lift nose to place any packing under jockey wheel? The jockey column would never stand the strain of being driven up a ramp that steep/high!

It's all looking rather unstable and precarious to me with everything sitting on 200mm (8") of assorted packing devices! As to leveling under those circumstances, use of any kind of sloping pitch looks like a nightmare which would destabilise the outfit even more!

Then there's the transport/stowage of all these lifting/packing devices! Eating into you luggage space/weight capacity quite a lot! - car ramps are huge and heavy!

And you'd do this every time you use your van! IMHO, a properly fitting full awning, which seems to be the best option for your van, is a lot less work, probably less overall weight, much quicker to set up, and inherently safer in use, and not limit you to near snooker table level pitches!

The Old Dears set up is still pretty much within the realms of normal levelling heights/practice with far more achievable methods.

I was going to put up a picture of my Tornado XL with the Trio awning to show that you don't need to raise the caravan much, but the green photo bar won't let me. It brings up a load of random photos from my hard drive along with the message "You have uploaded 13 photos from an allowed maximum of 10. You can increase this limit by leaving more campsite reviews from this year or last." Does anyone know how to get rid of that?

I would seriously look at chopping maybe 5-6 inch off the bottom of the awning if at all feasible (a couple of inches 'scraping the ground' isnt bad). Raising the van 8 inch up is madness on a number of levels. Not least for the time it'll take at each end of the stay. There are plenty of places who will alter your awning for a decent price.

I have done some re-measuring and think I will get away with only a 15cm rise, which most ramps/levellors will do. I know you get get stacking pads for the legs as well.

Even if you achieve a 15 cms. height with ramps and stacking pads it still leaves a problem with extra height of the jockey wheel (as mentioned by Monty15). If you extend it too far it will travel to end of the thread and fall out so you will have to use spacers and adjust the height of the jockey wheel at intervals respectively. I've had to do this without ramps when the ground slopes away at the front of the caravan or pitched on an incline and it's somewhat frustrating and time consuming to say the least. I still think that a full awning is the best option under the circumstances as it will save all the height adjustment, quicker to erect the awning and much safer.

I think you'll find it annoying to do this every time. Also will need extra step to get in which will sink in mud and fall over. OK if on a seasonal pitch so permanent arrangement on blocks.

Extra long bottom skirt on caravan side?
