Hi,
Looking for recommendations for a safe trickle charger to leave attached to a caravan battery while caravan is in storage unit. We have access to electric in the storage unit so if we can keep battery charge maintained on site instead of removing the battery and bringing it home it would be easier. Plus, as we are paying storage fees we may as well use their electric as provided. Are there specific trickle chargers for leisure batteries or will any type do the job safely?

Lidl, or Aldi occasionally have trickle chargers in stock, and several people on this forum use them, but I must have been unlucky, because the two I bought turned out to be duff and were returned for a refund.

We then bought a CTEK 5 Amp charger.

a good condition battery assuming nothing is connected and drawing power from it should have a very low rate of self discharge..

i have had one stored in my shed for about four years now.. its had about four top up charges during this time and has always showed a full charge whenever i have checked it..

if a battery does discharge noticeably i would take it as a sign the battery is well past its best..

just my thoughts of the subject..

i now have solar panels on the roof and lithium batteries so all this kind of stuff is in the past for me..

Yes you must have been very unlucky Jim. I've had my Aldi charger a number of years now and it gets regular use on my leisure battery. It still works perfectly. Only snag I find with them is that they are not always in stock.

Wow! That is a huge difference in price too. Over £66 including delivery for the Ctek as against £13 for the Aldi one.

Yep both the Aldi and Lidl chargers are now 5amp, and go into trickle once the battery is fully charged, 0.08amp if I am not mistaken.

Of the two latest ones from Aldi and Lidl, I prefer the Aldi version, partly due to the detachable crocodile clips, allowing for a more secure connection to the battery for longer term maintenance.

I also have the older Aldi charger which is 3.8amp which my son uses, and my oldest charger a CETEK Zafir 90 £36 from COSTCO at the time, which must be 15 years old, but the mode button failed on it, although after watching a youtube video, showing how to repair what is a common fault, it is back up and running again, although only for up to 90Ah batteries.

Thank you all. Will look into the aldi/Lidl ones as that's a good,price compared to some.
