My Border Collie is a Demon chaser of balls, bikes, cars, pretty much anything that moves quickly (very typical BC!), so I have to be very careful. To a degree it depends on what the outlook is and what she can see from the door. If the awning is up, I rely on the flyscreen, as my dog can't see anything to interest her through the awning curtains, and has never shown an inclination to damage the screen. If the awning is not up I wouldn't trust her not to forget the screen was there and go for her 'prey', so the door stays shut.
When I read Tango55's suggestion of 'not escaping from a properly pegged down awning' I actually laughed out loud! (Sorry Tango! ). My dog is not exactly a small dog who can squeeze through a crack, but she's a very smart dog, and she ably demonstrates there are many escape routes from forcing door zips up to pushing the draft skirt under van and making a gap, very much a case of where there's a will there's a way, and she's very wilful and resourceful!
If I really need her to be 'contained securely', for if she had free reign of the van even with the door shut, she'd almost certainly discover she could force an ajar window open and jump out, I use her crate, either in the van or in the awning (be careful of how hot it gets in the awning!). I do occasionally use a long line anchored to something secure like a corner steady or ground anchor, but get fed up with untangling it from things, mostly my legs!
If I'm with her, she's obedient enough not to be a problem, out of my sight is another matter, as the saying goes "If you don't give a Collie a job to do, they go self employed!"
Back to original request, I did get a couple of baby gates from freecycle for the house, Mothercare fabric mesh clamp fit adjustable width ones (no idea of model number/name, but quite old now), which do also fit just inside my caravan door, but having watched her just 'ping' from a standstill straight over them in the house decided they were pointless in the caravan (and house!)! 
To sum up, no single method used to contain dog, a multitude of ways depending on individual circumstances.
