A few of you regular visitors may have noticed some of my posts over the last couple of weeks and realised we have just got a (new to us) van.
It’s a 2010 Coachman Wanderer 19/4 It was purchased from a local dealer, and whilst there are a couple of faults that need to be remedied on the whole we are both very pleased with it.
It’s been treated well and is in lovely condition.
However, there’s one ridiculous piece of design stupidity on this new van that absolutely astounds me.
The controls for the gas/electric operation of the water heater are situated at the bottom of the front seating bunk, approx six inches off the floor right up against the drawer unit.
Why !!!???
Which over paid brainiac thought that would be a good idea ?
They cant be accessed if the front bunks have been made into a bed, so anyone sleeping in them has to be got up and the seating put back together before the hot water can be switched on.
Any children sitting on the bunks swinging their legs are likely to be kicking them.
I would hesitate now to pack anything in the front whilst travelling for fear of things smashing into the switches and causing damage. To my mind it just made the whole front of the van out of bounds for carrying anything.
The controls on our earlier Coachman were all together and up at unit height and perfectly accessible and safe from damage.
Has anyone else encountered ridiculous design blunders in their vans or is it just me that’s gone OTT with this ?
Andy i have the exact same van, To be fair we never touch the water temp and its never been caught with anyone's leg in the 6 years we have owned the van

yes, we have a coachman , the switches are on the bottom of the front seating facia , but at the opposite end to the drawers, they can be reached fairly easilly from the end of the bed ,if its made up.
but we never touch it whilst on holiday , it stays on the whole time ,as its only about 200 watts, and the thermostat just keeps it hot all the time.
