We came across a problem this weekend and I’ve been thinking about what I might do if I ever faced it again. We arrived at our site on Saturday and there had clearly been a period of very heavy rain so the ground was very soft. The grass pitch that we were allocated was significantly off level from side to side so we got out our trusty Milenco triple levelling ramp and used the motor mover to move the caravan up the ramp. However, the ground was so soft that the leveller started to sink into the grass and then because of the angle of the sinkage, the ramp cracked and then broke completely. We had to resort to various pieces of wood which we had in the front locker and again, as we moved up the wood, the weight of the caravan was just pushing the planks down into the soft ground. We are finally level on two 1inch and one 2 inch thick planks but really only 2 inches is above the ground, the other 2 inches of plank is completely embedded in the grass (I dread to think what the pitch is going to look like when we leave). Everything seems fine at the minute and there has been no further sinkage (apart from the steadies needing regular tweaking as they keep sinking, despite the big feet, but it has made me wonder what we could have done to stop this happening.

Does anyone have any tips to stop the levelling ramp/planks from sinking into soft ground?

The first tip is...don't camp in a bog!!

I couldn't believe your comments about how soft the ground is. If I was allocated a pitch like that I would be immediately back at reception telling them what to do with it (fairly politely of course).

When I had a small caravan I carried blocks of wood with me and no matter what the state of the pitch, a block went under every steady. I emphasise 'steady' because many new caravanners think the 'feet' are for levelling the caravan which is far from the truth, and trying to level a caravan using the steadies can end up with one being pushed up through the floor ( which had happened to one caravan 'in perfect condition' I went to see when I was looking to buy a caravan).

My advice is to go back to reception, tell them the pitch you have been allocated is not suitable for a caravan in it's present condition, and ask for a dry, well drained pitch.

Far too many campers accept the first pitch they are offered because they feel they are indebted to the campsite for giving them a pitch in the first place. Bear in mind you are the customer and they are providing a service, and as with anything else you are buying, you wouldn't accept second best. If Tesco offered you an out of date loaf would you accept it or tell them where to stick it?

If you look at the underside of a levelling ramp it is moulded with strengthening ribs going the length and width which creates a series of pockets and because the ribs are thin they will compress easily into soft ground. The only solution is to place the pieces of flat wood under the levelling ramp first then use the motor mover to drive up the ramp. The flat wood underneath will help to support the ramp and stop it from cracking which should somewhat reduce the amount if sinking into the soft ground although it won't eliminate it completely.

With ground like that... susceptible to becoming so wet and so soft as to not fully support a standard caravan set up... my first thought is that the site should at least be offering (F.O.C!) some sort of suitable aid?
Perhaps nice big slices of decent plyboard? I'm thinking a minimum 50cm square? I'm thinking a minimum 15mm thick, if not 20mm?

Either that, or they seriously need to consider digging it all up, re-stoning. re-turfing etc, so the ground is actually suitable for its intended purpose.

I know which one I'd choose, if I was an owner hoping to keep my customers happy!

To be honest, I was shocked when I saw the grass pitches. The first pitch we were allocated was so sloping that I knew that I would not be able to get the van level, even with the equipment we had with us so we asked for a flatter pitch. Thinking back on it, there were big holes in that pitch that I thought had been dug by a previous occupant but now I think the holes were made by the previous person’s levelling ramps sinking as well! The lady at reception took ages trying to find us an alternative pitch as apparently the site is full over the next few weeks and this one that she finally found for us was a bit flatter but just as soft. Strangely it is not boggy and doesn’t feel very wet and due to the slope, is well drained but the ground is just really soft.

I would say that over half of the 400 or so pitches are hard standing and although most of them also need levelling ramps, it is much easier to level on hard ground so the people on those don’t seem to complain. However, we are not the only people on a grass pitch who have been complaining. A huge Motorhome arrived for the pitch opposite us on Sunday and I could hear the owner complaining on the phone to reception that the pitch was too sloping and asking to move. There clearly wasn’t anywhere else as he finally set up on the pitch but after a while, gave up trying to level and is just sitting at an angle! Another large Motorhome couldn’t get level on a pitch a few further up from us and he is now set up on the flat tent area at the bottom of the hill but those pitches don’t have electric which we need.

This is not the sort of site we usually go to, we like smaller sites, but due to only making the decision not to go to France a few months ago, we couldn’t get in anywhere else! I will definitely not be back to this site again and I will write a full review when we get home. The site itself is surprisingly quiet for the size of it and the facilities are good but the grass pitches are a joke. I like stepping out of the caravan onto grass rather than gravel but this has put me off grass pitches for life!

Just a thought without knowing the lie of the land...obviously you are using ramps to level the caravan from side to side. Would it be possible or any better to turn the caravan sideways and level it with the jockey wheel, with a wooden block under the jockey wheel of course or that will sink in as well?

It sounds as though you were given the pitch that everyone else had declined. As it was that bad, then the owners should have helped provide suitable packing. But if it was that soft, could you even walk on it?

We use a lock and level, rather than ramps. It would probably have sunk in but maybe not as much, as the weight load is spread over a greater area.

I get the feeling that in normal times, the site probably has hard standings for caravans and grass for tents. The present incredibly high demand means they are using tent pitches for caravans and finding them to be unsuitable in teh current weather.

Their only other option is to phone you and cancel the holiday.

Unfortunately the pitch slopes nearly as much from front to back as it does from side to side. I just can’t understand the popularity of this site. There are at least 100 grass pitches, almost all of which are on these big slopes and they are almost all full.

All the grass pitches seem to be the same. It’s a very strange situation as the ground does not feel wet or boggy and you can walk on it fine without sinking in. Our caravan has a mtplm of 1550kg which is heavy for a single axle and this might be why it is sinking but I agree that the site needs to do something about these sloping grass pitches.

You can buy milenco grip mats - when placed under the ramp they are supposed to help prevent any sinking

This may not have solved the OPs problem, but a cheap alternative are chopping boards.

I have a pair of them just in case but luckily I have never had them out of the packet and it suits me fine.

After the last 24 hours of rain we now have a paddling pool in the awning! This is definitely a site I will never be returning to!
