Hello all, I hope someone out there can help me out, this looks like a great site and apologies if my first entry is long, but I wanted to be thorough in my description. I am trying hard to avoid buying a new fridge! Also wanted to let you know what I have done to try and correct the issue. Also have a wife and 3 kids wanting to get away in September for a Lake District off grid week!

This fridge is installed in our Elddis caravan and has been working fine before lockdown on 240V and Gas, never used 12V car hook up!

Out first outing since lock down was last week to the Yorkshire Dales, it was off grid, so we were on gas!
The fridge compartment was not getting cold, off milk etc, etc, no thermometer handy but it was warm
So when we got home, I hooked up to the mains! I put a fridge thermometer in the both the freezer and the fridge and got 1 degree in the fridge and -5 in the freezer.

Did some research into what the gas issue could be and have done the following: -

Removed the fridge and turned it upside down, heated pipes gently with a blow torch and gently tapped all pipes with a rubber hammer. Left it for an hour, turned it on its side following the flow of the pipes and repeated the heating and blow torch process. I did hear gurgles, let it be for 2 hours and then turned it upright.

Checked door seals with a bank note, all four edges and good seal!

Inspected the burner, it was sooty at the spark and thermo couple entry points to the burner and note (Before removal I noticed through the window that the flame had yellow edges and poofed and popped when lit!
So I removed and cleaned the burner unit, when removed I soaked it in alcohol and hit it with compressed air from an industrial compressor and gave the burner box a good clean and vacuum. Re assembled as built (I photographed every stage)

Cleaned the hanging spiral, cleaned the flu with a length of wire with cloth tightly wrapped around it, not very dirty but done.

Did a bench test on Electric only, checked for heat at the back top and bottom of flu and all related pipes, temperature was even. Installed the two fridge thermometers fridge and freezer and got the following readings: - 1 degree in the fridge and -5 in the freezer. Same as before!

Next back to the caravan and did a partial install re: - connected the gas and all 12V needed to run the gas side, thermostat, sparker, left the covers off the burner unit and the outside van covers off to allow inspection of flame. Got a good flame, no yellow about 25-30mm high, checked temperatures at the top and bottom of the flue and as per electric even!

Again, installed thermometers, left it running for 5 hours on gas.
I got the following readings: -
15 degrees in the fridge and -5 in the freezer.

So now I am very confused.
Works fine on 240V – Fridge and freezer
Gas Freezer good Gas fridge not!

Both heat sources are good.

I thought it must be the thermostat on the gas side, but it cools the freezer, have not tried to run it on gas with the gas thermostat on low to see if the freezer temperature drops, that is next!

Any advice much appreciated and apologies for the long posting!
Nick

hi ,
it seems as though you've done everything right, and very thorough.
its difficult to understand how you can only get 15 degrees in the fridge with -5 in the freezer, as the fridge gets its cooling from the freezer.
even more so as the fridge cools on electric.
i cant give you a solution for this , except to recheck the fridge temp again
maybe someone can come up with some answers

If you have nothing in the fridge it won’t feel that cold. Put some cans of drink in & leave overnight. If they are cold next day then fridge is working.

Thanks for your advice, very much appreciated.
This evening I have reinstalled the unit, fitted and connected, gas, electrics, fixings, its level and placed two thermometers inside one in the freezer and one in the fridge.
Attached a full gas bottle, lit the gas and will wait 24 hours to see what readings I get.

Thanks for your input chaps!

I will report back with results.
