Yes you may be right on that one ;) so the caravan club is the "new" Caravan and motorhome Club yes?
Correct or CAMC.

AndyDW, did you not have the "extra care" element to your Mayday cover? Just wondered if this would have provided you with a hire car while on holiday?

To be honest I never even thought about that. I'll look into it though, see exactly what cover I have.
I had breakdown with the RAC a couple of years ago. We had a puncture on the Caravan on the A10 in France. I rang them and they said that the Caravan was not covered, I ended up (as it happened in roadworks) paying for a breakdown service to come out and change the wheel. I did have a few strong words with the RAC on my return home as I asked them before getting the cover if it would cover the caravan and they said it would. I now have cover through the CAMC. I have used it once my cable from car to caravan had been cut and couldn’t get anyone out to sort it out. I couldn’t praise them enough they brought the caravan home and put it on my drive as my battery was dead. My drive has an upward slope from the road, he got it on and even help me line up the also wheel lock. I know a few people who have used them both in Europe and at home. All said they were excellent and always respectful.
The total price was £129 for membership and breakdown.

Thanks for that Les. My worse nightmare is being stranded with a broken caravan! :( I just wish there wasn't so many negative reviews for the CAMC on Trust pilot. I suppose you take your chances with all of them. If I take up membership though, I will go with "extra care" breakdown package as that should cover most scenario's :) Glad you had a good experience when you needed them :)

If you have any doubts and talk to them they will put your mind at rest. By the way I have never met any wardens that have been anything other than polite and respectful.

We are members of CAMH and have caravan insurance as well as breakdown cover through them with a Green Flag (Mayday) "UK Premium Plus" policy.
This includes the terms:
"We will get you and your vehicle to a pre-booked campsite, take your vehicle to the nearest garage, or take you and your vehicle back home after your holiday if it can't be repaired"
and
"If you break down during your stay, we'll get you back to your campsite and we'll take you, your passengers and your vehicle home if it can't be repaired"
I'm happy that we would be covered in all cases, though we rarely use the club sites as I'm not a fan of the regimented rows of vans.
We've found that it's definitely not worth skimping on these forms of breakdown insurance.
A few years ago, we were booked onto a site in Germany, and planned to drive down through Belgium for a stopover.
Unfortunately our car broke down just as we got to the stopover site and we had to call our European breakdown service (it's not available in the UK now).
They turned up and confirmed the transfer gearbox was at fault and offered to take the vehicle to their own garage. As the car was less than 18 months old, we insisted they take the car to the nearest dealer instead (it never happened). They offered us a hire car for 3 days whilst the car was in for investigation/repair.
The car was not able to be repaired so we asked them to arrange for us and our caravan to be returned to the UK so that it could be fixed locally, at which point they said that as we had already received a hire car, they would not provide any further repatriation of us, though they would be able to recover the car and van. We ended up paying for ourselves to return via Brussels on the Eurostar and incurred quite a lot of expenses, as well as losing the cost of the holiday. It took them 3 months to finally get the car and van back to us.
Crikey Saftlad, what a nightmare! I can understand you wanting top notch cover after that experience. I am getting the feeling of biting the bullet and joining up :)

As Ian says,
the Caravan and motorhome club has lots of CL sites on its books and they're for members only, we use them a lot, however we hardly ever use the club sites. Its worth joining the club just for the CLs, the Mayday service is the icing on the cake.
Hi Malkeiron, I asked the lady at CAMC about this and she said that I could join today and take out Mayday straight away and get the same cover as everyone else :)

That's great news. Glad you got what you wanted and just hope you never need to use them. Happy camping
