For years I wheeled the aqua roll to the tap, lifted it upright and filled it. Back to the van and I did the same. It was a struggle.

I discovered that if you put the handle nearer the ground and moved it from right to left and then back again, the aqua roll turned.

Now I fill up, back to the caravan and leave it on its side - do the twist to have the aqua roll turn so that the side hole is upright and put the inlet hose into it. I don't even have to remove the handle. Just leave it resting against the caravan, ready for the next time.

That's all well and good if you happen to have a water barrel with a side cap which I don't. Both of my water barrels only have the single top cap so have no option but to stand them in the upright position.

Like an awful lot of things in life, sometimes technique overcomes what brute force struggles with!

My van came with a 52 litre water barrel, now full up that weighs about 54Kg (115 lbs), yes I'm robust enough to lift it, but you learn to manoeuvre it in such ways as you don't have to lift the full weight, basically only tipping it whilst it still rests on the ground and only having to 'lift' less than half the weight. I use mine either on it's side or upright depending on what suits the pitch best, been on sloping pitches where pump only reaches 2/3 into barrel on end or 1/2 way on side, generally you can pump down to the last litre or two on it's end, but only 5 or 6 litres on it's side as pump is no longer submersed!

Never had an issue steering the barrel whilst rolling, it just follows you as you tow it, or were you pushing it! - pushing makes hard work of moving it and renders far less control!

I am a 5 foot weakling so manoeuvring the water barrel has always been a challenge for me. This is why I love serviced pitches! I might try leaving it on its side the next time we need to use it to see how it goes.

Mine only has a top cap and I bought one of their stiff tube with a cap accessory so that I could stick my blue water hose in it to reach the bottom. Very useful.

As for manoeuvring it when full, I don't need to lift it, just tip it to one side and turn the way one would move an aluminium beer cask.

I prefer dragging it up a slope, and being dragged down a slope when it is full.

Each to their own.

Don't think that I would rest the handle against the van, too much risk of it marking the paintwork!
Wether right or wrong I use 2 40ltr grey aquarolls and just rotate between them. Use vertically but fill from the side
seems to work OK for me.

Its a sight easier left on its side, but it may want filling a bowl of water earlier than stood upright, due to the pump struggling with the dregs on the curve of the barrel.

Why not just go on fully serviced pitches with a water master connection. Absolute bliss if you can afford it........

I have a cap with a tap for my aquaroll so you can use it with out a pump. Like we did in 2007 when we had no running water for two weeks when the water works flooded
