Certainly 'CRiS' is a genuine caravan industry organisation that is a central registration for caravans (bit like DVLA is for cars), effectively issuing a 'Registration Document' that is your proof of ownership. If manufactured/sold in UK after 1992, (you say 'new' van, but not sure if brand new, or just new to you!) your van will have stickers on the windows with it's unique serial number, and post 2016 will also have a hidden RFID Vin Chip that can be read remotely by the Police and such like.
If buying or selling, registration allows buyers to check that van is not listed as stolen or has outstanding credit on it, or has been an insurance right off.
Can't say whether the people who contacted you were genuine or not, but CRiS certainly is, if bought from a dealer, surprised dealer didn't do the registration formalities for you, if a private seller, they may have notified a change of ownership which has initiated CRiS contacting you.
