Our caravan insurance is due for renewal and as we have a new for old policy, I have to change the insured value every year to reflect the latest price of a new caravan. I always use the RRP as the sum for insurance purposes, even though you can often get it a bit lower but I was completely shocked this morning, when I looked at the figures, to see that the RRP of a 2022 version of our caravan is £5000 more than it was last year. In the past I think it went up by about £1000 each year but a £5000 price hike in one year is unbelievable.
I suppose the one benefit is that it is keeping the second hand value of our caravan high. I had a quick look on a couple of second hand sites and our exact year and model of caravan is currently selling second hand for exactly the price we bought it for brand new 5 years ago!
The problem is that the forecast for the future on interest rates this week, people could be reluctant to take any risks regarding their personal financial budget so sale prices could eventually fall dramatically. In reflection of this it makes me wonder if insurance will decrease as well because oil prices have fell in the last few weeks but we motorists are still paying the same high prices at the fuel pumps.

I'm afraid you must inform the CAMC of any change in the RRP of your van with a new for old policy, otherwise you could be in for a shock come a total loss claim.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I believe this is the same for all insurance companies, it is up to you to maintain that part of the policy by informing them.
They're far too busy to look it up.

Just renewed ours, and gone from 12 to 15k on a like for like. I decided i wouldnt want a new van if we lost this one anyway. But you should always give a figure that you expect back if the van is a total loss.
I dont know why many are surprised by the price hikes, as absolutely everything has gone up hugely. Mainly because shipping stuff/raw materials to the UK has gone up as much as 500% in many instances. eg a 40foot shipping container was $2500 pre-covid, now it can be $18000. And if its contents are low value units, someone has to pay down the line, and that someone is me and thee.
When we got our renewal from CMC I called them and upped the value to the current replacement cost and an increase in contents for inflation.
Yes the premium increased a bit but best not to be under insured.
I think a dealer would sell our 4 year old Unicorn for not far off its new price!

We have a new caravan on order for May delivery.
When we received the contract it states that the dealer can increase the price by up to 10% before we can cancel and get our deposit back.
I have not signed the contract and returned it. They have not chased me so far.
What is our position?
Any ideas?

On new for old it is the responsibility of the insurer to make sure that the premium is adequate to cover a replacement. We insure our caravan in Oct and within 9 months there will have been a price increase for the next year's models. As an individual there is no way that you would know the expected rise in the cost of a replacement new caravan.
So are you saying that after you have insured it and the price goes up, your insurer ups the value of the van on your policy?
When you phone the CAMC to renew they will ask you the value of your van for the policy.
Years ago we were with Caravan Guard and they looked up the cost of a new van when you were on the phone and you had to agree with what they said. Imagine if they looked up the wrong model.
Caravan Guard have for years not insured vans over a certain value unless you fit a tracker to it. This is only told to you after you have filled in all the quotation info.
