It has become virtually impossible to source a Calor Lite Cylinder now and I am looking for a new replacement. I normally keep two in the front locker when touring.

I have two Calor Lites and about to start the second bottle, which will be used up in next few months. I don’t want to replace with the steel bottles as combined would appear it’s going to add circa 13 kgs of unnecessary weight and i prefer to carry two when in France?

Does anyone use any other makes of propane gas that use lighter bottles, I don’t mind having the regulator changed if necessary?

Thanks

The situation you are in regarding Calorlite is identical to what I had as I didn't want the steel gas cylinders either due to severely affecting the towball noseweight which is 75 kgs. However, I did some research on BP Gas Light cylinders and found that they are now owned by Flo-Gas which I have a local supplier just over a mile away. I purchased 2 small empty second hand ones independently on FB Marketplace for a total of £40 and decided to put my 2 x Calorlite on FB marketplace the day after and although one was empty and the other about a quarter full I sold them within a few hours for £60. I did however have to change the pigtail which was due to be changed anyway after nearly 5 years so that's how I got round it and works okay for me. The problem is that the refills are probably a tad more expensive but you need to shop around for prices.

I did have Calor lite but was finding it harder to source them,
I started using Safefill 7.5 kg now which are refillable lightweight bottles. They’re expensive to purchase at first but it only cost around £10 to refill it compared to £26 to exchange a Calor lite!
I’ve seen empty Calor lite being sold on eBay for over £50

Only comparable exchangeable cylinders are Flogas (was BP) Gaslight 'plastic' cylinders, slightly smaller 5Kg cylinder than Calor (or bigger 10Kg IF it will fit locker! Gas is more expensive per Kg than Calor, but widely available. B and M stores were slightly cheaper than many outlets.

What you need to connect up depends on whether you have bulkhead regulator or cylinder mounted regulator, bulkhead regulator requires a standard 'Butane' pigtail hose AND a 27mm clip-on cylinder adaptor, or a 27mm clip-on cylinder adaptor and standard butane cylinder regulator is probably easiest cylinder mounted option. All readily available and relatively cheap if you shop around. DIY fitment, no more difficult than changing a cylinder.

A fair number of empty Flogas Gaslight cylinders available on Fleabay and classified ads, then just get a refill, may be cheaper than buying official full cylinder from scratch, but do the sums before buying.

I changed to Safefill which is light and refillable. It can be filled with lpg in the UK and Europe

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

As my caravan is sited in anglesey i use dulas boat yard for calor gas. And i wanted a new 6kgs of propen got a steel one for £27 that was begging of january last week i wanted another one. They only had a calor light at £33.90 seven pounds in difference no changing pig tail straight swap.Got talking to the owner and he suggested as weight is not important next time swap the 6 kgs for a bigger bottle so thats where i stand if i can save a few pounds next time its a bigger bottle as i dont have to put it in front locker

I too use Safefill instead of Calor Lite, I get twice the gas with half the weight for a fraction of the cost. New bottles are still hard to come by due to a global shortage of plastics. Refilling locations can be a problem in some areas of the UK.

Calorlite bottles will get more difficult to source as time goes on.
Calor are not producing any more bottles and will withdraw any faulty ones whatever the cause (valves etc.).
I now use Flowgas/BP gaslight, readily available at Flowgas depots and B&M Garden Centres.
You could probably pick up empties at your local recycling depot or pay for ones via Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or your local re-selling site.
If you have to pay for the empties to exchange, you can sell your Calorites to more than cover the cost.
You will also need a new adaptor like THIS or complete with hose like THIS

Thanks for the helpful replies, it looks as though i will switch to the BP Gaslight. Even when i enquired this morning with a local Calor Depot, they don’t even have any of the standard 6kg propane bottles at the moment.

Apart from the new connector and pipe for the BP/Gaslight, will i need to have to change the bulkhead mounted regulator?

Thanks

No, just a straightforward replacement of the hose and adaptor.

I have gas light cylinders and I used to get them filled up by a company who run there coaches on gas. Unfortunately he doesn't have any more coaches running on propane. Is there anyone else who fills bottles preferably while I wait.
Thanks
