Hello. We opted for Mayday through the Caravan Club partly for that endorsement. We are covered for recovery for car and Twin axle 8ft wide van. They also covered our second car for an extra £25. Total cost this year just short of £100.

You have to watch some of these covers, because one of the big clubs only covers you within 75 miles of your house. I nearly took it up till i read the small print.

We once had the RAC 'Arrival' breakdown cover back in 2012 as the C&CC advertised that it was peace of mind if you breakdown with a caravan. Unfortunately, we did break down nearly 200 miles from home. They didn't live up to their promise though because the patrol man said that there were several codes displayed and the car needed to go to a Volvo dealer. The RAC patrol man took the car away to the nearest Volvo dealer for repair and after two days of having my car I rang the garage for an update to which they confirmed that they hadn't even looked at my car so had no transport to get basic necessities such as food and drink so had to get a taxi to the nearest petrol station mini supermarket for our basic needs. To cut a long story short, the garage said they couldn't repair the vehicle and needed the RAC to take it away. When I contacted the RAC they refused on the grounds that you are only allowed the one tow. It took over 24 hours to finally get some assistance but they wanted to charge me per mile for the recovery which IS NOT stated in their policy. I threatened to take legal action when I got home for failing to adhere to the customer needs and leaving us stranded without any food or drink for over a day. Eventually we did get the rescue free of charge but it's not the service that they promise or expect when you have paid the extortionate price for extra level of cover to get peace of mind. It's like insurance, you don't know how good they are till you have to make a claim and it's no difference with a breakdown company.

Sorry to hear your bad experience.
I thought it was only the 75 mile rule if the car and caravan are separated.

Yes, the 75 mile rule is correct but that's if you breakdown in your car within a 75 mile radius of the campsite where your caravan is pitched. I had broken down half a mile down the road from the campsite and managed to return to the campsite in limp mode so our car and caravan were together when the RAC were called out. It was the RAC's patrol man that made the decision to take my car to the dealer not mine which was considered to be the one tow allowed which I wasn't told about otherwise if the RAC patrol man had said we had a choice then we would have decided to go home instead. The RAC management finally contacted the patrol man that came out to us which I believe that it was his comments that influenced the decision to organise the rescue on the basis that he never offered us a choice and could be deemed illegal to leave us stranded without any transport.
Once bitten twice shy as they say and wouldn't trust them again due to a lack of confidence when it should be peace of mind like they promote in their adverts.

We tried the RAC for one year and found that they were nearly £60 more expensive than Mayday. Never heard of the 75 mile restriction. With Mayday we pay £130 for top level cover for two cars.

I dont think you can label anything 'top level' until you have had cause to try it. They can claim anything, but puddings and proof spring to mind.

Saying that, i am going to tempt fate, and say i have only ever broken down once in 40 years. And that was a fuel pipe jumping off the filter 20 miles after it was fitted. So more incompetence than the car 'breaking down'.

Edit - sorry, twice. I once ran up someones backside in the roadworks on the M1 blocking it. But thats a minor detail easily forgotton.

We've got Mayday cover which we had to use last year due to car breaking down on the way home.
Car couldn't be fixed at the road side so car was put onto low loader and caravan towed behind.
They dropped the caravan back to our storage yard then took our car on to a garage of our choice. So based on that I would definitely recommend Mayday plus when we renewed this year the premium was the same as last year, £130 which I thought might have risen slightly after using them.

This 75 mile restriction seems a bit off.

I have a Nationwide Flexi account cover and the only restriction is that you have to be more than 400metres from your home

Cover Level
Customer Needs
Roadside Assistance Customers who need assistance in the event they breakdown more than ¼ mile away from their home address and need recovery to a local repairer
At Home Customers who need assistance in the event they breakdown at or within ¼ mile of their home address and need recovery to a local repairer
National Recovery Customers who, if we are unable to repair the vehicle, need their vehicle to be recovered to a single destination of their choice
Onward Travel Customers who, if we are unable to arrange a prompt local repair, need a hire car or hotel accommodation or public transport costs to continue their journey
Accident Assist Customers who require help following a motor accident in their car that was not their fault
European Breakdown Service Customers who need breakdown assistance in Europe

The caravan is treated as part of the car when attached.

Check the small print on that if the caravan is over 7m including the A Frame they won’t pick it up I’ve posed the question.
For us joining a club just to get the cover we want is a waste for us as we won’t be using their sites but, to get the level of cover we have no choice.

We’re certainly not rich it’s just a single axle caravan that’s 7.49m. Which I’d have thought was a pretty aver size van.

The reason is because they think that by law the shipping length of the caravan cannot be more than 7m, but the law refers to body length. We are with nationwide but our caravan has a shipping length of 8.16m although body length is under 7m. Even after speaking to them and explaining they would not budge as they thought they were CORRECT. Idiots!
