The water pump comes on for a few minutes and then turns off on its on. Is this ok. It happens all the time

The pressure switch may need adjusting or the o rings on the pump connection could be worn. Make sure its firmly pushed home.

We had a Ranger where the pump kept switching on for a while then off, even during the night.

The solution was a new pump.

Hopefully just worn 'o' rings, unlikely to need a new pump. At worse, there could be a hairline crack in the water inlet fitting, allowing a slight weep of water from leaking out. The symptom of the pump occasionally running is simply indicative of loss of pressure in the system.
