Hi, just wondering if anyone has experience of buying a caravan from Somerset Specialist Vehicles at Walford Cross, Taunton, Somerset?
My husband has seen one for sale which he likes the look of but, whereas this used to be Walford cross Caravan sales, its changed hands and is now more of a car sales place. I'm uneasy buying from someone who is not especially a caravan dealer. Our present caravan came from Highbridge in Somerset which has a really good reputation.
Basically after some reviews from anyone who has bought from Somerset specialist vehicles as can't afford a costly mistake.
Thanks.

First thing do they give any warranty and secondly as you say they are mainly a car dealer are they capable of backing it up if needed. If no walk away. Also bear in mind that Lunar now stopped production and it may be difficult obtaining any parts body wise.

If you are buying from any business, rather than from a private individual, you have legal protection against defects. However, if you are buying a caravan from a business that is not primarily a caravan dealer, who is going to carry out any repairs necessary? I'd be a bit cautious but I wouldn't rule them out.
Thank you both, will have a serious think about how wise this would be. Have my doubts about it.

A local car dealer tried the same. The couple of caravans he had seemed to sit for months before they moved.
Of course he shifted them at the pandemic.
He no longer sells caravans.

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I'd be very careful about buying a van from anywhere which is not a fully legit caravan business. I'm continually sickened by reports of people being ripped off because their enthusiasm to own a van got the better of them. They may have saved a lot of time and anguish being more cool headed and calculating with respect to their intended purchase.
I've heard of horror stories with brand new vehicles purchased from dealerships so why make the buying process, potentially, more dangerous than it all ready is?

I think a lot depends on what exactly you are buying, and how much you are paying. My first ever caravan was bought from a car dealer who occasionally had a couple of caravans for sale on his forecourt, but they were usually real cheapies, as mine was. I can't remember how much it was now as it was back in the mid-1970s, but I know it was quite old and didn't cost us a lot. We had a few enjoyable years with it though.
If you are looking at one not that many years old, and costing many thousands, I would be much more wary as you have a lot more to lose if things go wrong.
Well we popped in and looked at the caravan that was advertised as in excellent condition. It wasn't. There was evidence of damp in front corners and it needed a good clean. Apart from which I didn't like the furnishings either! Won't be looking at any others there in future.

Sorry to hear that you didn't find that particular van up to standard. There are lots of van's out there but my advice is to always buy from a caravan retailer, and give it a proper going over before committing to buy. I'm still finding tiny but annoying issues with my one year old van and I thought I'd done a good job of inspecting it.
