I've used PeggyPegs, both plastic and steel and different lengths, for nearly ten years ...

On all types of ground ... drill in and out.

Find them marvellous ... would recommend.

I have not come across steel PeggyPegs, only plastic or aluminium ones, where could I find steel ones please? Thanks in advance.

I have a couple of their really long aluminium ones for the awning straps and they worked well for me.

Another vote for Blue Diamond screw-in pegs. Ours came with an adaptor but a 13mm socket would do. We always screw them in and out with a battery drill, the same one I bought for winding the corner steadies. It was only a relatively cheap drill but it turned out to last quite a bit longer than a far more expensive one I bought for general use, or at least the battery has. I now use that "cheap" drill for everything.

Hi all
I bought 2 boxes of the screw pegs from Aldi with the 13mm adaptor included for £7.99 (15 in each box)
First time I used them I found the toggle was captivated onto the screw body causing them to snag on the rubber awning ladders.
Once back home I knocked the toggles off then reamed them out with a drill bit then slipped them back onto the screw peg.
Used them on another 2 outings found them to be brilliant
Hope this helps

Thanks all for your replies, some really useful information as usual from this forum. Think I may just go for the coach screws and penny washers as they seem a really cost efficient solution.

Thanks for that Pixie Hex, what size of adaptor will I need to fit the coach screw heads?

Sorry Fred, the pegs are in the caravan and the caravan is in storage so I can’t find out the size but whatever size it was, we had an adaptor in our standard kit that came with the drill so it must have been quite a commonly used size.

Use 200mm screws from diy. I use a 700w cheapo hammer drill with an extention. Just plug into van once hooked up. Then sit back and listen to the lesser spotted peg hammers all around the site

Out of curiosity I looked on my drill yesterday as I couldn't remember the brand or where I got it from. I have had it quite a few years now. Turns out that was an Argos own-brand too. Mine has been used for all sorts including hammer, but I don't use it on hammer to drive pegs in. We never use hard standing if we can help it. The only time we did was when we went on a small independent site in Oxfordshire and there all the caravan pitches were hard standing. We didn't know until we got there.

I needed a better drill for the last 2 sites I stayed!

Next trip is on a grass pitch with EHU, so it should be easier for the screw in pegs to go in. That pitch is quite hard under the first couple of inches - it is my favourite pitch at that site so I know it well and I go there nearly every year since 2009.

I shall look for grass with EHU pitches in future if I can't find AWPs, and pray for dry weather!

We definitely don't like hard standings if we are staying longer than a week and putting the awning up. The other reason we don't like them is because all the sites with hard standing that we have been on, quite understandably have the pitches "regimented" in neat rows. We much prefer grass pitches where we can set the caravan up any way round that we like.

Need a 13mm drill adaptor too for the pegs.

The hammer action will be pushing the screws through any 'threads' they are creating in the hard ground. Essentially hammering them in, potentially damaging the screw threads, and weakening the grip. They are designed to screw-only.

Spot on .... and technically, the screw heads, the screw tips and the 13mm adaptor are NOT intended for hammer action, they will suffer (proper percussion action parts are heavier duty)! Hammer action is intended for use with SPECIFIC drill bits and causes the TIP of the BIT to fracture hard material, more like a hammer and chisel, and allow it to pass through. Use of Hammer action completely misunderstood in this application, it's on a par with hammering in screws, it negates the real benefits of a screw!

I don't DIY around the house, can't you tell???!!!

The drill works for me, and the pegs appear to survive the abuse, so all is well!
