My cross actuator bar sheared off behind one of the mover units (for unknown reasons - suspect damage in fitting by dodgy dealer! - must get it fixed under warranty - it's not an uncommon problem!), I had to remove the bar entirely to stop it dragging on ground at broken end. But both motor units are free moving and easy to operate individually, so no stiff/binding/unlubricated engagement mechanism.
Yours sounds like a different problem, but without knowing your units brand or model, it's difficult to advise. Most of the MM manufacturers, Powrtouch especially, have a good back up service, so advice and spares if needed are not usually a problem.
Best suggestion is get a service engineer to look at it (mobile ones are usually cheaper than fixed premises ones, and will come to wherever the van is), clearly something is wrong, worse case is it fails with the MM engaged with the tyre, then you are rendered immobile and unable to tow or even push/move longer distances!
