Hi all, I am hoping someone out there can help me.
I had a new battery from fitted by Raymond James (its a long story).
I then had a Reich mover fitted from a Reich fitter I met at the show and he said that the battery is dead. So I plugged it into the mains for 2 days and checked it out after a couple of weeks and was showing around 10 volts (dead). I took the battery off borrowed my mates CTEk and spent 3 days charging. Battery showing 13.4 I refitted battery in Box. I also fitted directly to the battery a 10 watt Solar panel and temporarily mounted in the the front skylight. Even with the panel connected I am losing 0.1v every day. Is this normal?
Thanks in advance.
Chris

a good battery should hold its charge for weeks.. disconnect your battery to make sure nothing is drawing current from it and then check if its holding its charge.. if it isnt you need a new battery..

Have you got the TV booster box (Amplifier) switched on hidden away in a cupboard as it's something that can quite easily be forgotten and will slowly drain the battery.

If you have not pressed in "the little black button" then other small things may be drawing current.....for example the radio if you have one fitted will draw current to store radio channels.

The self discharge rate of a flooded lead acid 12V battery is app 1% per day which is similar to the rate yours is discharging ,are you sure you solar panel is inputting anything?

Q: What is a typical self-discharge rate for a car battery?

"Any battery will eventually discharge itself. A flooded car battery discharge rate is about 1% per day at room temperature, 0.25% per day at 10 °C (50 °F) and 1.5% per day at 30 °C (86 °F). This self discharge percentage is the percentage of the remaining capacity, so a flooded lead acid battery will still have 50% of its capacity remaining after 6 months. Low-maintenance and sealed batteries have lower discharge rates of less that 0.5% per day and calcium-lead batteries can have a self discharge of less than 2% per month."

Hi Trog the battery is supposed to be new from Raymond James Caravans.

Tango The battery is connected but the on/off which I think is the isolator is off (next to the waterpump isolator). The 10 watt solar panel is connected directly to the battery and was hoping this would keep the battery topped up. The panel has an indicator that is red or green, and is charging. I have got the booster box (Amplifier) I will have to check.

MJH not sure what the black button is, please elaborate.

Saxo as you can see I am not that knowledgeable of Electrickery.

I am a little nervous - I have bought a motormover because I dont want to
man handle and need to keep battery topped up. Also storage space is challenging.

Hi All
I have just come back from the caravan which is at the storage place. It showed on 20th May 13.4v todays reading was 13.2v. The 10w solar panel is wired into the battery clamps, isolator is off, panel is showing green but due to good sunlight it is very hot.

I presume the solar panel is fitted in the front sky light. That may be reducing the solar energy coming through and hence reducing output.

10 watts is very small and if the panel is hot its output will be reduced even further.

Hi Navver
the small panel is fitted in the skylight. My intension is just to keep the battery topped up so I can use the the new motor mover on the storage site.

I think you need to determine whether :-

the battery is losing charge due to something using power

the solar panel isn't working and charging the battery

the solar panel isn't charging by day but consuming power by night.

I'd be tempted to disconnect the battery completely and check the voltage every day with a voltmeter.

The little black button is on the power unit, it is an isolation switch to cutt off all of the 12v electrics in the van.
