Hi all. I'm going to get a whole new jockey wheel for my caravan. The old one has a solid tyre. What would your preference be, solid or pneumatic tyre. I've noticed that on sites with grass or gravelly hard standing pitches the solid tyre can dig into the grass or gravel when using the motor mover. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
There was a pneumatic tyre on the jockey wheel when I purchased the caravan a few years ago but I changed it to a wheel with a hard tyre merely because I couldn't access the tyre valve to inflate it without having to remove the complete wheel and centre spindle from the bracket. That was a total pain to say the least but having a hard tyre is maintenance free.

I have had both, went back to a solid one after several punctures and once the tyre came off the rim.
The pneumatic one is better on gravel and soft grass but for me the hassle of punctures etc made me change back.

Heard all sorts of comments on pros and cons of all types, so not really sure I'd claim to know what's 'the best'! - if such a thing actually exists!
Mine's a solid plastic wheel (maybe a little wider than some!), and it's sufficed OK for past 5 years of my use on all sorts of terrain. That said, the flexing of the stem on course gravel/rocky HS when using the MM does look a little alarming. And I've never had it sink deep into soft grassed areas, maybe just lucky.
Thanks for replies. Very interesting article Monty15, thanks. I must say that getting a puncture while getting onto a pitch did cross my mind. Getting set up having to sort a flat out as well as sorting other things out. Water, waste, ehu, levelling and putting the Arument In A Bag up before I hit the vino is not good. Solid it is.
I'm with clbewi, just changed to a Kartt as I managed to bend the tube on the alko. The Kartt wheel is pressed steel, larger than the alko. The tube I'm hoping us stronger than the alko. Fingers crossed.
WE have small wheels on our dinghy trolleys. Inflatable definitely runs more easily but is a pain with punctures and especially so with jockey wheels which are too small to get to the valve.
We also have some which are puncture proof, many of which look like normal inflatable but are foam filled. They are brilliant.
As well is two words!
